Today we honor Juneteenth, a day of reflection, resilience, and remembrance. On this day in 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas were finally informed of their freedom. Juneteenth is not just a celebration of freedom, but a call to continue the work of justice, equity, and inclusion for all.

At YMCA Southcoast, we stand in solidarity with Black communities as we reflect on our shared history and reaffirm our commitment to building a future where equity is not just an ideal, but a lived reality.

It is with deep gratitude that we thank all of the volunteers, award recipients, board members, community partners, sponsors, donors, members, friends, supporters, and staff who joined us at our annual meeting last night. The stunning Mattapoisett YMCA was the perfect backdrop for a celebratory evening rooted in community, impact, and belonging.

Congratulations once again to our impact award recipients:

Community Impact Award: Damien's Food Pantry
Community Champion Award: Representative Tony Cabral
Youth of the Year: Alexandra Monteiro
Volunteer of the Year: Judy Perreault

Special thanks to our sponsors BayCoast Bank, Innovative Benefit Advisors, and Cape Cod 5 for your continued support.

And to Russell Morin Catering & Events for the amazing dinner, dessert, and libations.

Moving remarks from all of our speakers and award recipients were the highlight to the evening.

Our Youth of the Year award recipient shared that she hopes by volunteering on our farm she can plant the same seeds of wisdom that guided her to the farm, with the next generation. The applause from the audience confirmed that she is not alone in that mission.

Dr. Sedgwick Harris, President of Bristol Community College shared stories of his early experiences at his hometown Y in Michigan, highlighting that his childhood would have been much different without that Y. The reason he is gifting swim lessons to his nephew this year to that very same Y.

Thank you again to all who joined us in celebrating, reflecting, and looking ahead at the bright future that lies ahead here at YMCA Southcoast 😎

Thank you Representative Tony Cabral for your support of YMCA Southcoast and the communities we serve. Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition, and thank you for being a champion of our mission and community!

I am deeply honored and grateful to have received YMCA Southcoast’s Community Champion Award at their Annual Meeting. This recognition means a great deal to me and to the work we do every day on behalf of the residents of the SouthCoast.

The YMCA has long been a vital part of our community, and to be recognized by an organization that works tirelessly to strengthen opportunities for children, families, and individuals across the SouthCoast is something I do not take lightly.

Thank you to YMCA Southcoast for this honor and for the incredible work you do each and every day to make our region a stronger, more vibrant place to live and work!

Thank you New Bedford Light for highlighting this incredible community event.

Please join us tonight at AHA! PRIDE and be sure to stop by our table at the Block Party where we will have an interactive paint activity in honor our our late staff member, Danny Sallom who we miss tremendously. Help us honor his memory and dedication to the LGBTQ+ community and remind all of our neighbors that we are here for ALL.

The annual AHA! Pride Block Party will feature a drag performance at Steeple Playhouse dedicated to Ultima, a drag queen who passed away earlier this year.
