The Nevada County Sheriff’s HEART, (Humane Emergency Animal Rescue Team), officially launched on January 1, 2023. It is a nonprofit animal rescue team that is activated by the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office during emergencies and evacuations to assist with animal rescue. During most emergencies, the Nevada County Veterinary Disaster Response Team (NCVDRT) will also be activated by the Nevada Count

y Sheriff’s Office and they will continue to provide all of the necessary care and shelter for the animals until they are reunited with their owners. Both teams, HEART and NCVDRT, are staffed by caring, compassionate volunteers with a vast array and decades of experience in all aspects of animal rescue, transportation, and care. These two teams will work closely together, ensuring your animals receive the best care possible during these stressful events.

🚩 RED FLAG WARNING 🚩
Unfortunately, living in California means that wildfires have become part of our reality. When we experience repeated warnings and close calls, it can be easy to fall into a sense of complacency, thinking, “Fire will handle it,” or “We’ll deal with it if it does.”
But Red Flag Warning days are exactly when we need to stay alert.
Take a few minutes today to review your emergency plans, make sure your evacuation kits are ready, and check on family members, neighbors, and animals. Small preparations made today can make a tremendous difference when minutes matter.
The Nevada County Sheriff’s H.E.A.R.T. team reminds everyone that emergencies don’t schedule appointments. Stay informed, stay prepared, and don’t let familiarity turn into complacency.
Let’s all do our part to keep our families, pets, livestock, and communities safe.

🚩 Red Flag Warning: June 10–11, 2026 🚩

CAL FIRE is urging residents to use extreme caution as gusty winds (up to 40 mph), low humidity (9–15%), and warm temperatures create critical fire weather conditions.

Any fire start could spread rapidly. Avoid activities that could spark a wildfire and be prepared to act if conditions change.

🔥 One less spark means one less wildfire. Stay alert and stay fire safe.

Please don’t be caught off guard! It’s critical that you are prepared to respond to an emergency situation at a moment’s notice!

Good morning everyone! Here is a reminder of tonights monthly meeting, 6PM at the Rood Center.
And in case you have yet to read the monthly newsletter, Stefanie asked that everyone immediately (before finishing reading) take time to ensure their "go-bags" are up to date and ready.
And if that wasn't enough to motivate you into a state of readiness, the high volume of yesterdays fires should have had you super energized to be fire ready! There were at least 3 fires in Nevada County alone! The firefighters on the ground were very busy in both north and south County as well as our neighboring counties and the air crews were fighting one fire as they were being requested to divert to other fires!
PLEASE...be ready! See everyone tonight. Sounds like a real good educational meeting is on tap.

What an incredible day! ❤️

A huge THANK YOU to all of the amazing local businesses that opened their doors and supported our annual Fill the Feed Bucket fundraiser. Your partnership and generosity help ensure that our team is ready to respond when animals and our community need us most.

We also want to recognize every single HEART volunteer who spent the day out in the community wearing red shirts, holding red buckets, smiling, educating the public, and collecting donations. Your dedication, passion, and willingness to give your time is what makes this team so special.

Because of this community, HEART can continue purchasing critical emergency response equipment and supplies needed to protect and evacuate animals during disasters and emergencies throughout Nevada County.

We are truly humbled by the support shown yesterday. From the bottom of our HEART… thank you for believing in our mission. ❤️🐾
