Every balloon released into the sky comes back down.

Every single one.

And when they do:

→ Sea turtles eat them (they look exactly like jellyfish)
→ Seabirds eat them (balloons are 32x more deadly than hard plastic for seabirds)
→ Strings entangle birds, marine mammals, and turtles
→ Livestock eat deflated balloons in pastures
→ Fragments become microplastic in soil and water

Balloon releases are still common at:
→ Fundraisers and memorials
→ School events
→ Gender reveals
→ Weddings
→ Celebrations

Where do they go?

→ Latex balloons can travel 1,000+ miles before falling
→ They DON'T biodegrade quickly (months to years in marine environments)
→ Mylar balloons NEVER biodegrade
→ They've been found in the deepest ocean trenches

11 states now restrict or ban balloon releases.
More legislation is advancing every year.

ALTERNATIVES THAT WORK:

→ Bubbles (biodegradable, just as photogenic)
→ Pinwheels (reusable, colorful, kinetic)
→ Butterfly releases (actually helps pollinators)
→ Seed bombs (wildflowers grow where they land)
→ Planting a tree in someone's honor
→ Luminary candles or lanterns (ground-based)

The sky isn't a trash can.

What goes up must come down.

And something alive usually pays the price.

Keep the celebration. Lose the balloons. 🎈
