If there's one lesson we've learned a thousand times over it's that a well fed crew is a happy crew.

At this point, we're fairly invested in researching the relationship between a good home cooked meal and the quality of work it yields to save historic buildings. Through our rigorous field testing, we feel confident this is one of the "secret ingredients" to our style of volunteerism.

If you're not convinced, maybe you should visit https://historicorps.org/2026-volunteer-opportunities/ and find a project you can test the goods at yourself 😉

There was plenty of work to be done at Sherando Lake Beach House this season, but one of the coolest parts of our job is seeing the BEFORE and AFTER.

One of the tasks our volunteers and field staff were challenged with was repairing the dormer framing and replacing the skylight with cedar shakes. As you can probably tell, the underlying rot and weathering the roof had suffered was in great need of some HistoriCorps TLC and we were more than pleased to get the job done.

Plenty of other wins were stacked at Sherando Lake Beach House this year and we can't wait to share more of the work we accomplished with an all-time crew!

We got a few inches of snow and sawdust up at Buckhorn Work Center this season!

Today our crew is wrapping up after 4 weeks of repairs and rehabilitation work on the garage. Usually our annual field staff training is the benefactor of our May snow dump here in Colorado, but since we opted to host it in Virginia this year, we called in for our Buckhorn crew to be the lucky ones.

We think it appropriate to say they had a good time! Thank you so much eeryone who participated at Buckhorn with us this season!

Woohoo! Check out our recent feature in the Arizona Daily Star highlighting our upcoming volunteer opportunity coming up at Crescent Moon Ranch outside of Sedona!

SEDONA — John Lee started Crescent Moon Ranch as a cattle operation in 1880, but by the 1930s, the Baldwin family had replaced cows with fruit trees.

Why do we care about preservation?

There are many reasons to care about historic preservation, but preservation matters because our built environment is a resource that must be protected. Preservation plays an important role in protecting our country's cultural and architectural heritage and helps keep our shared history alive. By preserving historic structures, we strengthen the relationship between our architectural fabric and the lived experiences that these buildings represent, creating continuity between past and present.
