WEEK ONE is in the books at Provancher Ranch in Colorado!

Last year it took a government shutdown and a 100 year flood to send our crew home, but this year, not even Hurricane Simon could keep everyone from showing up. Talk about work ethic 🤣

With four total weeks of volunteer sessions at Provancher Ranch scheduled, we're already making a ton of progress and moving through sill log replacements that will improve the building's stabilization. Wish us luck and good weather conditions!

~ BIG NEWS ~ We're proud to introduce Part 1 of our Preserving Section 106, An Educational Series!

With changes being introduced to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act , we've opted to engage in the discussion of why current regulations are so important for organizations like ours and how the newly proposed changes could dismantle current and future protections.

WHAT MATTERS? The NHPA requires federal agencies to consider the effects of their projects, funding, or permits on historic properties before altering their existing character, and newly proposed changes could disarm this process and open the door for bipassing historic preservation requirements.

Over the next 6 weeks we'll be posting a new segment weekly about preserving Section 106 and we hope you'll join us.

~ Pike's Stockade, CO 2026 ~

Last month we snuck down to the San Luis Valley in Colorado to give this National Historic Landmark a proper facelift. Our scope of work focused on swapping out deteriorated logs, or removing parts of them, and replacing in kind while making sure we keep as much historic timber as possible .

We did just that and were able to successfully navigate the complex game of Tetris involved with a fortress like Pike's Stockade. It's pretty cool to see strangers from all over the country show up a historic landmark and walk away with history intact for future generations to witness.

We'll look back at this adventure as a solid win for preservation work in the state of Colorado! We still have plenty of work left to complete in 2026 and hope you'll keep your eyes peeled for more shared updates along the way.

Our work at the Hunter Creek Valley has concluded for the season, but check out this photo capturing the road house, outhouse, and shop amongst the changing fall colors!

Truly a majestic setting with a tumultuous history dating back to the 1880s. Prior to Euro-American settlers and miners putting down roots in the Roaring Fork Valley, the Ute people thrived here for thousands of years.

In the 1880s William C. Koch would travel west from Leadville and arrive in the Hunter Creek Valley, reshaping its history and establishing the earliest homestead to the area. Visit the Hunter Creek Historical Foundation's website for more information at www.www.huntercreekhistoricalfoundation.org

Last week marked the conclusion of East Channel Lighthouse off Michigan's Grand Island.

A big part of our SOW was filled with masonry work around the lighthouse including stone rebuilds that kept volunteers in and out of view. We're still digesting the incredible experience had over several weeks along the shores of Lake Superior, but we're thrilled to see the camaraderie and lasting touch of HistoriCorps volunteers on the beloved lighthouse.

Lighthouses like the one at East Channel are not the most common locations for HistoriCorps projects, but are certainly some of the most popular. This season we saw nearly 70 registrations vie for our 18 available volunteer spots - proof that many people believe in our mission and want to get their hands to work saving historic places like this one.

We'll have more to report later on East Channel Lighthouse, but a big thank you to everyone who was able to join us this season on Grand Island!

Join us at the Provancher Ranch!

Join us this fall as we travel to southeast Colorado to work on the historic Provancher Ranch and help preserve an important piece of history.

Provancher Ranch was constructed in 1913 by Marcellino Archuleta and is historically significant due to its association with agriculture and ranching development within Southwestern Colorado. The Provancher Ranch was established by David Provancher, who worked in the timber industry before settling into the cattle ranching trade.

According to the Colorado Cultural Resource Survey, the cabin and barn structure are architecturally significant under National Register Criterion C as an intact example of hand hewn full dovetail log construction used for ranching and agricultural buildings in the early part of the 20th century by people settling in remote areas of Colorado. The craftsmanship of the cabin structure in particular is exemplary in its fit and assembly and is likely only one of a handful of standing cabins of its size in Archuleta County which remains set within a historic agricultural setting that is virtually intact.
