Saline County Poor House has just been released!

Volunteer with us this November along side Job Corps Students to make critical repairs to the historic poor house of Illinois' Saline County.

The Saline County Poor House served as a haven for the county’s most penurious residents. Originally housed in a makeshift structure, the poor house was moved to the newly built brick building in 1877. For years, this building served as both a shelter for the county’s poorest residents and an opportunity for these individuals to contribute back to the operation of the grounds, as residents were required to work on the farm if able.

One one of our most breathtaking opportunities of the season is approaching and and we want to share it with you!

The rustic Kane Ranch is a treasured part of the dynamic ranching legacy that has shaped the area since the late 1800s. Extending across the Kaibab National Forest, the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument, and more, the Kane Ranch is a part of the larger North Rim Ranches that host cattle, research, and restoration grounds.

According to our partner at the Grand Canyon Trust, they bought grazing permits for Kane and Two-Mile Ranches in 2005, now collectively called the North Rim Ranches. These permits cover 830,000 acres of national forest and Bureau of Land Management lands, and the Grand Canyon Trust works with the Jones family to manage the day-to-day ranching operations.

The Kane Ranch Headquarters is listed on the National Register for its association with the broad pattern of settlement and ranching on the Arizona Strip. The original building was constructed in 1877, and the site served as a ranching hub for over a century. The 1877 structure is a one-story, two-room, side-gabled house with symmetrical massing, sandstone walls, a partial-width front porch, and cedar shake roof. Sometime before 1915, a rear shed-roof addition with sandstone walls matching the original construction was added to the building.

October is coming sooner than you think, and what a better way to dive in to the fall than joining HistoriCorps to restore Provancher Ranch in the San Juan National Forest!

Volunteers can anticipate learning new skills and opportunities to flex your preservation shops. We'll work to improve building stabilization through sill log replacement, perform a essential wall log repairs and foundation repairs, and complete necessary drainage work. HistoriClub, we've got another shot at redemption!

Today we're announcing new volunteer sessions at our previously canceled volunteer opportunity at Saline County Poor House in Illinois this November. Volunteers will have the chance to work side by side with JobCorps Students as we close our season in Saline County.

We've hit the ground running at Whitcomb-Cole House!

It's been fast but eventful as HistoriCorps has teamed up with members of the Northwest Youth Corps to restore the pioneer home built in 1875! Despite being moved from its original location, it remains on the National Register of Historic Places due to its exemplary log cabin construction and its unique interior finishes.

From removing the deteriorating cedar shake roof to exterior siding repairs, our crew has had their hands full. So much goes on during these projects and we want to thank every volunteer, field staff, and friend at NYC who has poured their sweat into keeping things upright at Whitcomb-Cole House!

“I was really inspired to see well-educated, young people really care about the history and preservation work. It was really inspiring.”

As we begin our final session at AHP: Stanislaus National Forest Recreation Residence Survey in California, it's always fantastic to receive feedback from volunteers that give us a pulse on how things have been going.

It's not secret our volunteer program caters to retirees and seniors, so when we hear that one of our projects is noticeably connecting with a younger audience, our ears perk up. Recreation Residence Surveys as part of our Architectural History Program are a great fit for undergraduates and post-graduate students looking for hands-on experience evaluating historic buildings.

As we grow this program, we are hoping to inspire the next generation of preservationists to join HistoriCorps in saving places! Keep us in mind next time you are chatting with college-aged adults looking for that next step in their careers preserving historic buildings.

If you've hung around HistoriCorps long enough, you'll know there's been one project we've kicked the can on for years. Anderson Lodge in Wyoming.

Deep inside Shoshone National Forest our first session this season at Anderson Lodge has us paired with members from the Montana Conservation Corps, and by the looks of it things are getting off to a great start!

The Shoshone National Forest was originally called the Yellowstone Timberland Reserve when it was set aside in 1891 (under the management of Mr. Anderson). It was the first national forest in the United States. Encompassing approximately 2.4 million acres, the forest consists of a dramatic landscape: from huge swaths of exposed rock, to snow-capped mountains even in July, to expansive meadows and forests.

Anderson Lodge is named for its original dweller, the artist, rancher and philanthropist Abraham Archibald Anderson. As a rancher, his love of the outdoors and commitment to its proper management led to him becoming the first Special Superintendent of Yellowstone region, and his home served as its first administrative headquarters.

Next week we add HistoriCorps' volunteers to the mix and we're excited to see all of the photos still to come!

VOLUNTEER WITH US AT KANE RANCH!

We're looking for volunteers to join us along the rim of the Grand Canyon for one of our biggest adventures of the season restoring the historic Kane Ranch. It's currently eligible for the National Register of Historic Places for its association with the broad pattern of settlement and ranching on the Arizona Strip and has shaped the area since the late 1800s with its ranching legacy.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to repoint all mortar joints on the headquarters building with the potential for additional window rehabilitation. Session dates run the weeks of October 4-9, October 11-16, October 18-23, October 25-30, November 1-6, and November 8-13.

Hunter Creek Miner's Cabin in Colorado is coming up FAST!

Located just above Aspen, HistoriCorps is preparing for our 6th season preserving the historic structures of the Hunter Creek Valley.

Session dates include: August 23-28, August 30 – September 4, September 6-11, September 13-18, and September 20-25

Volunteers will continue our work from last season and reconstruct the roof of the Miner's Cabin. We're filling up fast, but it's not too late to register!

We're underway at Section House in Colorado!

Just a short 30 minutes from the iconic town of Breckenridge, HistoriCorps volunteers and field staff are hard at work tackling the various elements at the Section House Complex. From the main house, Ken's Cabin, the outhouse, and the board walk, our volunteers are doing everything from masonry to log work.

At this project, it's import we do a final, cosmetic pass of daubing, ensuring that the new layer matches in color, composition, and texture while maintaining historical accuracy. As you can see, we put a little something extra in our mix to make sure its treated with care 😉

For the last two summers HistoriCorps volunteers have weathered through the storms at this unique high-elevation alpine project along the Continental Divide, adding another layer of challenge to the mix. It'll be no different this week while we're in the thick of Colorado's monsoon season.
