Miss Juliette is one of many former students at Petra School on the Rock who have been given hope and the building blocks to rise above poverty. Her journey continues at Petra School C in Nairobi, where she inspires her own students to believe that their beginnings do not define their futures

“Hope is the very first step out of poverty.”

William Probst (grade 11) ended his Empty Bowls essay with this striking statement.

This week, and Hammond Homeschool partnered with Torchgrab Africa for its first-ever Empty Bowls Fundraiser!

For several weeks, students researched the effects of poverty on children around the world. The Empty Bowls project encouraged not only awareness, but action.

As students wrote essays influenced by their insights, they also painted two bowls - one to be sold at the fundraiser for Petra School students and one to keep as a reminder of the project.

A bowl is a simple object. But in the hands of these students, it became a reminder to ask:

What does it mean to notice hunger?
What does it mean to respond?

Our June newsletter is coming soon! To learn more about this event and read William’s full essay, drop a comment or message to join our mailing list 💌

ABOUT THE PROJECT:

The Empty Bowls Project weaves together multiple disciplines—art, social studies, English, and Bible—creating a holistic educational experience rooted in empathy and purpose. In the slums of Nairobi, many families deal with hunger and empty bowls every day. Berean HSE and Hammond Homeschool are partners in this initiative to instill compassion in our students through making a difference in the lives of students at our sister school, Petra School on the Rock in Kenya!

Salem Woo was a member of our May 2025 team to Nairobi. Today, she shares about Front Range Christian School’s “Seed Money” project and its impact that she witnessed firsthand during her time in Kenya.

More about the SEED MONEY PROJECT:

This annual project has generously supported the vision of Torchgrab Africa for decades. It also provides students at FRCS a proactive opportunity to make a difference and serve as missionaries within their own local communities, while also supporting and empowering students like themselves across the world!

We are so grateful for our wonderful partnership with and thankful for their faithful generosity over so many years! This year’s donations have been instrumental in the development of our newest school, Petra Torchgrab School, in Mombasa.

A BIG thank you to the students and staff at !

We are grateful for our partnership with Berean Homeschool Enrichment! Under the guidance of Kimberly Probst (director), students used their creativity and talents to sell crafts and services to raise both awareness and funds for Petra Torchgrab School in Mombasa, Kenya.

The funds were allocated to building improvements as well as providing protein-rich porridge for our children at Petra Torchgrab School.

Our Porridge Partner program is a vital source of daily nutrition across all Petra Schools. As our newest school grows, we’re seeking more partners to help provide these meals. It's a simple, practical way to make a lasting difference.

As we enter this week of remembrance of Christ’s death and resurrection, let us reflect on the reason we support our students, encourage our teachers, and give our time and resources to the ministry of Petra Schools.

We love because he first loved us | 1 John 4:19

Every student and staff member at Petra Schools is precious. We strive for their academic success, but more importantly, we love and care for them, hoping one day they will personally see and know the Saviour who loved us first.

For while we were still sinners, Christ died for us | Romans 5:8

Wishing all of our supporters a blessed and holy week ✝️

What makes a good friend?

Anna Ward is a loving mother, wife, and friend. This month, we had the joy of welcoming her back on a team.

During her visit, she shared a special children’s book she had written. It's a sweet and simple exploration of what it looks like to be a good friend, and how Jesus is our Saviour and friend. Copies were donated to all four Petra Schools for the children to enjoy.

This project is deeply personal. The illustrations were created by Sean Burnham. His late wife, Jill, was a cherished childhood friend of Anna and a generous supporter of Torchgrab Africa and Petra Schools. Her life was tragically cut short in a car accident a few years ago.

Jill’s heart for Kenya and the Petra students was immeasurable. She had the opportunity to serve on a Torchgrab Africa team, and her memory lives on in the hearts of all who knew her.

A Good Friend is written and dedicated to her memory.

The book is available on Amazon, and all proceeds go toward supporting Petra Schools. https://a.co/d/04JO61Cn
