Ozaukee County Legion Family members of the seven units/posts that make up Ozaukee County — or as we like to say, the Land of OZ — were asked to donate 250 items of food to their local food pantries. Ozaukee Food Alliance, Port Washington Food Pantry, Cedar Grove Food Pantry, and Family Sharing received over 1,200 pounds of food items, including pet food and cash donations of over $1,000 — with more donations coming in — and delivered on a balmy -2 degree day.

The need to help our school-aged children is imperative — a bag with protein-enriched food, as well as a few fun items, are given to the students weekly. This is done secretively to maintain dignity to the student and their families. This is a need that units in Ozaukee continue to support.

Many units across the country participate in R.E.D. Friday. The tradition stands for “Remember Everyone Deployed,” a weekly reminder that freedom is not free and that many of our brothers and sisters are still away from home protecting our way of life.

Auxiliary members nationwide actively wear red every Friday — until all troops come home.

The ALA offers five $2,000 scholarships for non-traditional students. The Non-Traditional Student Scholarship aids American Legion Family members, veterans, active-duty servicemembers, or veterans’ spouses to pursue a degree later in life or pick back up to finish. To learn more, go to www.ALAforVeterans.org/scholarships

Tiffany Orlando received the Non-Traditional Student Scholarship to further her education, pursuing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree at the University of Phoenix. She is on track to graduate this year.

Orlando is a Paid Up For Life American Legion Auxiliary member eligible through her family’s long service in the military, with her father Michael Immel, U.S. Navy veteran, and her grandfathers Terry Grozinger, West Virginia Air National Guard veteran, Lyle Immel, U.S. Navy veteran, and Paul Sine, U.S. Marine Corps veteran. She also had great-grandfathers who served during World War I and World War II

The Auxiliary supports various scholarship programs that benefit veterans, the descendants of veterans, and The American Legion Family. If you are interested in applying for a scholarship, check out the scholarship links for eligibility requirements, deadlines, and application forms.

Hurricanes, floods, fires, tornadoes, or a personal crisis. The American Legion Auxiliary Emergency Fund (AEF) provides disaster and hardship assistance to ALA members.

Established in 1969, the AEF was created by then-National President Marcella Davidson and funded with a bequest from the estate of Auxiliary member Helen Colby Small of Burlington, Wis. Five decades later, the AEF is still helping fellow Auxiliary members get back on their feet.

Last fiscal year (October 2024 to September 2025), the ALA awarded over $529,000 in AEF grants — the most impactful year on record. One hundred and seventy-eight Auxiliary members received grants for disaster assistance after enduring devastating events like fires, floods, and hurricanes. Another 96 members received grants for financial hardship to help them avoid homelessness and during crises like a medical emergency or job loss. The numbers represent stabilized families, safety, and hope.

PURPLE UP DAY
April is when the unique challenges, sacrifices and experiences of the children of U.S. Armed Forces are honored through the Month of the Military Child. Most of us have heard of Honor Flight, and depending upon the point of origin, travel may be by airline or bus. Many of our American Legion Family members volunteer as guardians, who are the individuals accompanying veterans one-to-one on Honor Flight trips, assisting them during travel and throughout their visit to D.C. and their memorials.
