Behind Anita Sams's Wayfarers in Walton, an 800-plus-page history of Walton County, lies an extraordinary body of research. Preserved in our archives are more than eight file boxes filled with documents, correspondence, and research materials. Among them are hundreds of notes that Sams wrote to herself, offering a fascinating glimpse into her research process and the creation of this monumental work. Here is one interesting example.

Laura, our Archivist, and our volunteers hard at work in our archives. Edith and Anne were not present. These ladies work hard each week cataloging the thousands of objects, photos, and artifacts that you pass along to us. We are so fortunate to have these dedicated ladies working for us. You might notice we are not short of "Lindas."

It was almost “Between the Roses.” 🌹

After seeing the roses at the 1927 Rose Bowl, Georgia’s Charlie Martin wanted roses around the new stadium in Athens. Local experts said roses wouldn’t grow well here, so privet hedges went in instead. Sanford Stadium opened on October 12, 1929, with Georgia beating Yale 15-0, and the rest is “Between the Hedges” history.

Thank you to Jason Hasty, Athletics History Specialist at the University of Georgia, for a great night of stories and photos at Monroe City Hall. If you couldn’t make it, here’s a little of what you missed.

Want to hear about the next one? Follow along so you don’t miss it.

The Brown Fig occupies a building that once housed the City Cab Co. and the Black and White Cab Co. Check out the first couple of comments for pictures of other taxi locations
Before either of these businesses, the building was occupied by the Elis Cafe and Huff and Blasingame Dry Cleaners.
