Idle Hands Workshop We want to train “at risk” teens and rehabilitated adults in trade skill that will allow them to contribute to the workforce and be a benefit to society.

After 12+ years as foster/adoptive parents we have seen how the system helps the parents as they are trying to change their circumstances. The issue comes in when the rehabilitated adults try to enter the workforce. We want to set up a classroom environment with the tools and professionals to teach the recently rehabilitated and "at risk" teens trade skills like plumbing, electrical, and mechanical skills that will allow them to enter the workforce as contributing members of society.

General information

Through the foster care system, we have had experience working with rehabilitated adults and at risk teenagers. When they are working towards rehabilitation the state supports them by giving them a place to stay, money for food, and even a cell phone. Often, after they overcome and start to enter the workforce, they are only qualified for jobs at lower level pay. Once they get these minimum wage jobs, the state starts taking away the other benefits they had been given. This puts them in the position of having to decide between the benefits or the job. Often the decision is to take the easy way out and not take the job. We will offer training in marketable skills like plumbing, electrical, construction, mechanical, and auto repair. These skills will allow them to enter the job market at a higher level and not need the support of the state. This is our goal; to help people help themselves.
