Friends in grief help us move through grief.

Not every friend meets every need because God wired us uniquely. I mean, four different friends carried the paralyzed man to the feet of Jesus.

We need different friends to take hold of the mat. Friends who:

lean in and listen
send helpful books
show up to help
love through a meal
welcome your tears
remember tender days
keep inviting you over
bring sunshine into the hard

You may have noticed this too.

The empty chair is more noticeable.

The memories visit more often. The “first Christmas without” hurts in ways that are hard to explain. And sometimes you wonder why a season meant for joy can feel so heavy.

This is our reminder that Christmas isn’t about pretending everything is okay.

Jesus didn’t come to a perfect, peaceful setting. He came into darkness. Christmas happened because grief existed in the first place.

That’s why your tears don’t disqualify you from this season. They belong here.

Jesus came for the grieving. For the weary. For the ones carrying joy in one hand and sorrow in the other. He didn’t come to silence your sadness, but to sit with you in it.

So if this Christmas feels overwhelming..
please know that He cares for you and His presence is not threatened by your pain.🎄🥹

Not every storm is sent to destroy you.
Some storms come to reveal what’s unshakable in you.
She didn’t just survive the season, she met God in it.

She wept in the wilderness, but she worshipped too.
And that’s what changed everything.

Because when heaven marks a daughter, her breaking isn’t the end, it’s the beginning.

The ground she thought would bury her became the very place God built her.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

Or… is it?

Maybe this Christmas you are…

Mourning a loved one…

Battling feelings of loneliness...

Missing your family who lives far away…

Wresting with health issues…

Oh friend, we understand. This time of year may not feel as bright and cheery as we expect, but in the midst of the difficult emotions and memories that come with this season, we can hold tightly to the truth that the birth of Christ means there is hope in even the darkest of situations.

John 1:4-5 says, “In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” God’s light shines brighter than the darkness we face.

This December, let’s remind ourselves of these truths:

Because of Jesus, we aren’t alone. (Matthew 1:23)

Because of Jesus, we are loved completely. (John 3:16)

Because of Jesus, we can experience peace. (Luke 2:14)

His light shines brightly, even in the darkest of circumstances.

What truth are you reminding yourself of this season?

A prayer if you’re missing someone at your table this week—

Lord, I’m facing this Thanksgiving without the one I’d dearly love to celebrate it with. I ask for your comfort to hold me through the day and for warm memories even through the tears. I’m grieving, but I’m also grateful for so much. Thank you for being with me through this valley, for your promise to heal my broken heart, and for giving me joy in the mourning. In Jesus name, Amen.
