Recycling isn't new - but it's more important than ever.

There was a time when returning bottles wasn’t called “saving the planet.”

It was just what everybody did.

Glass soda bottles went back to the store.
Milk bottles got reused.
Paper bags were folded flat and saved.
Coffee cans became nail buckets.
And if an appliance quit working, somebody opened it up on the workbench before even thinking about throwing it away.

Nothing useful got tossed aside without a second chance.

A few empty bottles in a wooden crate might not have looked like much, but to a kid, those pennies felt like treasure. And to the adults, it was just common sense — use it, return it, fix it, save it, make it last.

That generation didn’t need a lecture about waste.

They lived through times when money was tight, things were built with care, and people respected what they had.
