Safer Communities Ministry Since 1985 Covenant Prison Ministries (CPM) has operated as a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization.

Safer Communities Ministry is a non-profit organization providing programs & resources that offer renewed hope for current & released inmates, substance abusers, & their families through our belief in the power of Jesus Christ to transform lives. In 2008, we changed our name to “Safer Communities Ministry.” Through the years, this ministry has labored to develop areas of ministry to fulfill its Mission to exhort, equip, and mobilize our partners to be more effective in changing the lives of prisoners, ex-offenders, and their families. Safer Communities Ministry partners with churches, religious organizations, community and government service providers, businesses, and civic groups to break and decrease the Recidivism cycle.

Yesterday and today, several SCM team members attended the NC Sheriffs' Chaplains Association Conference in Salisbury. Sheriffs' Chaplains play a critical role within the law enforcement community:

* The Chaplain becomes a guidance counselor and listener.

* The Chaplain becomes a mediator during a hostage situation and provides support to a suicidal individual.

* The Chaplain has the unpleasant task of sharing dreaded information by giving death notifications.

* The Chaplain relates to the officers by riding along and listening.

* The Chaplain is the personal friend, prayer partner, and most of all, readily available when called upon.

* The Chaplain maintains close contact with all officers while on duty and off duty, when requested.

* The Jail Chaplain maintains close contact with the jail officers and selects and provides training for volunteers.

Wednesday night, we attended National Night Out, an evening dedicated to bringing Anson County residents and local law enforcement together. National Night Out gives families, neighbors, and community members a chance to meet the men and women who serve our community, build relationships, and enjoy a night of fellowship and fun. Yesterday, we attended the NC Joint Reentry Council Meeting in Raleigh. Hillary McConnell was one of the guest speakers! She did a great job sharing her years of experience as SCM’s Reentry Case Manager/LRC Coordinator. She gave a presentation about the successes and challenges we’ve encountered in “Navigating the Path to Reentry." We’re proud of you, Hillary, and so blessed to have you on our team!

Something worth celebrating! The recidivism (rearrest) rate in Union County Jail for the 2024-2026 period dropped to 3%. This is based on inmates who participated in SCM’s Life Skills Courses. The national average rate is 44%! God is so good!
