Wondering when we need the most help to keep the shelves stocked?

Summer is often the hardest season for food donations. Many of our community members think about donating shelf stable supplies during the holiday season, but forget about the need come summer.

The need exists year round.

The added burden? Summer can be especially difficult because school meal access changes for many families while donations tend to slow down, so we have to get creative!

Today the spotlight turns to the #1 question that comes our way!

Truly, there is no single reason. The most common causes we see include housing costs, job loss, medical issues, mental health challenges, domestic violence, family breakdown, disability, transportation barriers and unexpected financial emergencies.

Often, there are several crises happening at the same time without a safety net to catch someone.

That’s why our work matters. We are here to build safety nets towards stability. This work matters: https://unionshelter.org/how-we-help/

Today we are tackling a big misconception around here! Are all of the people we serve middle aged men and women?

Not at all! We serve single adults, seniors, veterans, young adults, families with children, survivors of domestic violence and people who are employed but still struggling to afford housing. Homelessness does not look just one way!

We love informing people about the hard work happening behind the scenes!

Many of the people we serve have jobs. Others rely on SSI, SSDI, retirement or other fixed incomes. In fact, last year, 48% of the people served through the Community Shelter’s homelessness programs came to us with income already in place. The reality is that even consistent income is not always enough to keep up with today’s housing and living costs.

For participants who are unemployed or underemployed, our Economic Mobility Program helps connect people to employment opportunities, skill building and long term stability.

Thank YOU for being a part of the community who moves our mission forward: https://unionshelter.org/welcome.html

Ready to become an advocate for our work? Here’s another FAQ to help!

Short answer - no! Our programs are designed to help people move toward stability and permanent housing as quickly as possible. Emergency shelter is intended to be temporary, but the reality is affordable housing is limited and barriers can take time to overcome. We work alongside participants on goals, income, documents, housing plans and connections to services while they stay with us.

Last year, the Community Shelter helped 163 individuals move into independent housing as they worked toward long term stability.

Throughout the month of June, we are digging in and answering a few of the most frequently asked questions to equip our community with the truth behind our work!

Today, we kick it off with FAQ #1: Are the people we serve cyclically homeless?

Some people experience homelessness only once after a crisis. Others cycle in and out because the barriers they face are ongoing: rising rent, untreated health issues, disability, low wages, transportation challenges, domestic violence or lack of family support. Homelessness is rarely caused by one thing, and stability often takes more than one attempt, especially when affordable housing and support systems are limited.

Our job? To help make homelessness short, rare and nonrecurring whenever possible: https://unionshelter.org/how-we-help/
