We've been hard at work like beavers this fall! Our partners at Bureau of Land Management - Montana/Dakotas and Trout Unlimited volunteers are helping build beaver dam analog structures in Upper Willow Creek, tributary to Rock Creek outside of Philipsburg, MT.

The goal is to recreate a wet meadow ecosystem and restore 3-miles of degraded habitat by planting native shrubs and building analog beaver dams to benefit fish and wildlife populations in the area.

We upsized 5 culverts in the Lost Horse drainage this summer with Discover Bitterroot National Forest and Price Contracting, reconnecting miles of stream habitat for Westslope cutthroat trout.

Look closely at the shaded photo to see a dingo being operated to place rock in order to mimic natural stream conditions within the culvert. Tight Squeeze!

Trout handling with volunteers is always fun! This one was at the Ninemile Valley Restoration Project, which is in its 7th and final phase of completion.

The legacy Ninemile project is removing rows of abandoned mine waste piles along the creek and rebuilding the stream channel to restore water quality and habitat for fish and wildlife.

For the work to occur, we need to get the water out of the project area by pushing it into a temporary canal. Fish leftover in the old channel are salvaged - this time by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, Lolo National Forest, and Trout Unlimited volunteers. Fish are removed and safely transferred into the stream outside the project area.

In Anaconda on Warm Springs Creek, the installation of this large fish screen is well on its way. The fish screen is designed to keep fish out of the irrigation canal and in the creek. Included in the project is an upgraded irrigation water diversion structure to improve water management for the irrigators.

Project partners: MT NRDP, the Beaverhead-Deerlodge NF, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

A temporary bypass is in effect to dewater a 200-feet segment of the Clark Fork River in Deer Lodge, MT for the purpose of installing a fish screen and constructing an upgraded irrigation diversion structure in the river.

The project, located at the National Park Service Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site, is designed to improve water delivery and keep fish out of the ditch by screening irrigation water with the pictured conical screen.

This is a partnership project between Trout Unlimited, Clark Fork Coalition, and MT NRDP with support from U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, and private foundation funds.

Construction is ongoing at the Warm Springs Creek irrigation ditch fish screen project. Once installed, the fish screen structure will keep fish out of the ditch and in the creek where they belong.

This is a Trout Unlimited partnership project with the private water users, Montana Natural Resource Damage Program, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest.

Mercury Clean Up project kicks off in Philipsburg, Montana

"Trout Unlimited has worked with representatives of Granite County for years to study metals contamination on Fred Burr Creek and has been invested in fisheries restoration and reclamation in the Upper Clark Fork River watershed for more than two decades"

“This cleanup project at the Rumsey Mill site is an important step for Fred Burr Creek and should help reduce the level of mercury and other metals at the source. TU looks forward to seeing these necessary improvements completed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and working with the local community to evaluate if future projects would further improve water quality, fisheries, and impacts to public health.”
