The backpacking trip of a lifetime? There's a forest for that.

Picture this. You've been hiking for miles and finally find a spot to settle down for the night. You cook up your favorite trail meal — it's warm and tasty, albeit a little crunchy. You've never been able to rehydrate your meal to perfection, but you shrug it off. That doesn't matter.

Because tonight, you'll get to watch the sun set over one of the most beautiful high mountain lakes you've ever seen. It'll just be you, the alpine glow, and the soon-to-be plentiful stars keeping you company. This is the night you've been waiting all week for.

National Forests offer some of the most diverse and accessible recreation opportunities across public lands. And this , recreation fees will be waived on National Forests & Grasslands across the country.

So, make sure to spend the day (or night) exploring your local National Forest this Saturday. Happy trails! 🥾

Your support helps turn restoration into recovery for wildlife.

🏞️ Degraded streams are being restored.
🌊 Floodplains are reconnecting to rivers.
🐾 Riparian habitat is returning, creating space for wildlife to move, feed, and repopulate.

These changes matter. When rivers function naturally, ecosystems become more resilient and better able to withstand drought, wildfire, and extreme weather.

From the Colorado River Basin to forests nationwide, restoration projects are helping bring life back to streams and wetlands.

Sometimes the most memorable trips are the ones you plan on a Wednesday. 🏕️

Deep in the Linville Gorge Wilderness wildflowers carpet the forest floor, waterfalls echo through ancient rock walls, and views stretch for miles over the majestic Southern Appalachians. It's the kind of place that reminds you why we seek out wild spaces.

Not everything amazing needs to be booked months in advance.

Overnight camping in the Linville Gorge Wilderness on weekends and holidays requires a permit—but good news! You can snag one just 3 days in advance (or a month out) on Recreation.gov. Plus, you can go day hiking and roadside camping anytime (no permit needed!)

⚠️ Heads up: Some trails are still closed due to Hurricane Helene damage, so check current conditions before you head out.

TLDR: National Forests are full of incredible experiences you can reserve a month (or even days) before your trip—from backcountry camping to scenic floats and wildlife watching.

Did you know the water flowing from your tap may have started its journey in a National Forest miles away? 🌲💧

Healthy forests act as nature’s water filters, protecting the streams and rivers that supply our homes, schools, and communities. But as wildfire, drought, and erosion threaten these vital landscapes, the pressure on our watersheds grows.

The good news: proven restoration solutions are ready to make a difference—right now. Your support helps us restore forests and watersheds where it matters most, from the Colorado River Basin to communities across the country. Together, we can reduce risk, build resilience, and give future generations the confidence of a reliable water supply.

Let’s protect the forests that protect us. Join us in making a lasting impact for people, wildlife, and water.

What does it mean to belong in the outdoors?

For NFF’s Field Marketing Coordinator, Haley Huey, that question is layered; shaped by childhood memories, but also by ancestral labor and a cultural narrative that has long excluded the presence of Asian Americans from the forests, trails, and wild places we now seek to protect.

In her blog post, “Honoring Ancestry, Building Community: An Asian American Journey Through National Forests,” Haley shares her relationship with public lands – one that is built on both joy and generational pain. She tells a story of both connection and exclusion, throughout history, which she believes is essential to telling the story of who belongs in these spaces.
