SPARK Arts Ignite Learning Ensuring Access to the Arts for Any Given Child

Arts Missoula has teamed up with the Missoula County Public Schools (MCPS), the City of Missoula, and a broad range of local arts organizations to help bring our community the Any Given Child Initiative. The program, developed by the Kennedy Center, focuses on ensuring equal access to diverse arts learning opportunities for any given child in our community.

5th graders at Rattlesnake Elementary School made sculptures using elements of the book “The Birchbark House,” prompting them to use visualization and plot to create a scene. Below it, each student wrote their “Artist Statement” describing their work. 📝

Our own SPARK! Teaching Artist Bailey Zook brings sculpture projects like these to elementary kiddos around the community, one of many teaching artists who bring their expertise to individualized lessons in classrooms.

Students at Russell Elementary School studied stained glass art and geometric shapes this week. The 1st graders then had a chance to make their own creations with transparency paper and mixing colors with glue gel. We love to see these kids excited about their work! ✨

SPARK! Arts invited 4th grade students and parents of Rattlesnake Elementary School to a showcase of the artwork by students who were a part of Brian Christianson’s residency project, Capturing Change: Exploring Science through Photography.

Students and parents got the opportunity to write comments and questions under each photograph, encouraging open dialogue around the nature of what inspired their work. Thank you for all who attended and supported our students and our teaching artists like Christianson who put so much into helping inspire the next generation of photogs! 🖼️🌿🌎📸
