The Montana Book Festival is pleased—thrilled—to announce that John Samuel Brown has joined our team as our new Director! John (his friends call him Sam) is a lifelong Montanan who has resided in Missoula since 2010, where he has worked tirelessly for the arts at a variety of organizations, most notably KBGA and The Roxy Theater. He received his bachelors in English at the University of Montana and has written for publications such as the Missoula Independent, Brine the Zine, and Off Latch Press. You may have also encountered him cooking at one of your favorite restaurants or picking up your material donations for Home ReSource.

The Montana Book Festival is so excited to see how Sam *builds* upon his community experiences here in Missoula to make this year's IN-PERSON festival (Sept. 15-18, 2022) one to remember! Welcome aboard, Sam!

Thanks for the shout-out, Montana Arts Council!

We are so grateful for everything Tom Benson has done for arts and cultural programs in Missoula, especially the work he's done in his role on the Montana Book Festival Board of Directors (one of many groups of cats). Endless thanks, Tom!

After 18 years, Tom Bensen is planning to retire from his post as executive director of Arts Missoula, the nonprofit local arts agency.

We are all hungry for more community connection, and what better way to feel that special bond than by listening to a reading or telling a good story, sharing our experiences? We at MBF wish to continue to build a state-wide literary community through gatherings, both in-person and online, and we hope you will join us in our passion by giving to the Montana Book Festival on Giving Tuesday—today, November 30th, 2021. Every gift counts. Thank you for loving literature as much as we do!

Our Story

In response to the global health concerns around COVID-19 and the uncertainty about shifting safety regulations, as well as the growing number of cancelled book tours and postponed book releases, the Montana Book Festival is going to pivot into cyber space this year—its first virtual festival! Since 2015, the Montana Book Festival has made its home in the bookstores, bars and distilleries, art galleries, movie theaters, and other event spaces around Missoula, Montana. In 2020, all readings, panels, workshops—as well as book and merchandise sales—will take place online, available to anyone with Internet access and an enthusiasm to bring our literary communities together, and to make sure that the festival is able to maintain the momentum created by its previous directors. Should safety regulations allow, the virtual festival will culminate in a live, in-person event (or events), bringing Missoula together in celebration of its impressive literary past, its enduring present, and an optimistic future.
