Melodee Strong, the Minneapolis muralist, illustrator and beloved art educator, has died following a battle with cancer.

Known for creating art that celebrates culture, representation and belonging, Melodee spent decades shaping both the Twin Cities landscape and generations of students.

Her murals remain throughout Minneapolis as lasting reminders of the communities she celebrated and the countless lives she touched.

We are incredibly sad to learn that our friend and Greenway muralist Melodee Strong- Illustrator/Muralist has passed away, after a courageous battle against cancer. Melodee brought so much love and beauty into this world. She made our community more vibrant and more equitable for the many diverse cultures that make our community Strong. She will be deeply missed by so many people. If you would like to visit Melodee's Greenway murals, they are located at 12th and 13th Avenue. We will also be honoring Melodee at events and gatherings this summer and fall. More information to follow.

Detour Alert: The Greenway will be detoured 6/15-6/18 for the Pillsbury Ave Bridge project/bridge demolition. The detour will run from Bryant Ave to 5th Ave on 28th St.

Part-time Job Opportunity! COMMUNITY OUTREACH CONTRACTORS – POLLINATOR EDUCATION INITIATIVE

The Midtown Greenway Coalition is seeking three temporary Community Outreach Contractors to support a multilingual pollinator education initiative and major community Pollinator Party event taking place on August 1, 2026, as well as workshops in the months following.

These are temporary independent contractor positions focused on community outreach, event promotion, workshop recruitment, and educational engagement related to pollinator habitat and environmental education along the Midtown Greenway corridor.

AVAILABLE CONTRACT POSITIONS

Applicants should indicate which position they are applying for:

- Spanish-Language Outreach Contractor
- Somali-Language Outreach Contractor
- General Community Outreach Contractor (multilingual applicants encouraged)

COMPENSATION

• $30/hour
• Approximately 60–80 hours total, from July 1 through November 2026
• Flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends
• Independent contractor position (not an employee position)

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Contractors will support outreach and engagement efforts connected to the Midtown Greenway Coalition’s pollinator education programming, including:

• Promoting the August 1 Pollinator Party and workshops in the late summer and fall
• Recruiting community members to attend events and educational activities
• Conducting neighborhood outreach along the Greenway corridor
• Distributing flyers and multilingual educational materials
• Tabling at community events and public spaces
• Supporting participant sign-in and engagement activities
• Assisting with workshop logistics and setup
• Helping build awareness of pollinator gardens and habitat initiatives
• Conducting outreach through social media, community networks, and partner organizations
• Maintaining simple outreach activity logs

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Strong communication and community engagement skills
• Ability to work independently and interact positively with the public
• Familiarity with Minneapolis neighborhoods and community networks
• Experience with outreach, organizing, tabling, education, or community events preferred
• Spanish or Somali fluency required for language-specific positions
• Multilingual applicants strongly encouraged

SUCCESSFUL CONTRACTORS WILL HELP:

• Increase attendance at pollinator education events and workshops
• Expand awareness of pollinator habitat initiatives
• Build relationships with diverse community members and organizations
• Support welcoming and inclusive community engagement

Have You Seen the New Pollinator Gardens in the Greenway?

Last fall, we planted 15 new pollinator gardens along the Midtown Greenway, adding native plants and visible habitat improvements along the corridor.

These gardens support monarchs, rusty patched bumble bees, and other pollinators while adding color and life to the Greenway.
