We’ve been asking our volunteers how they got started volunteering and what they enjoy about it. Andrew is on the Bid Committee, is our Technological Services DH, works on our website and is one of our Discord admins - busy guy!

Since our early years together I’ve been helping my wife in her convention running by building websites, but it wasn't until 2023 that I dove in with both feet and joined that year’s Eastercon committee (the annual UK national science fiction convention). Initially I came on as secretary, and did my best impression of an organised adult. It was a great opportunity to get a broad overview of how a convention is run. As time went on, I picked up some IT and software side quests, which fit me a little better. I’ve now worked on convention software in some capacity for several Worldcons and Eastercons.

Seeing how the work we put in improved the convention experience for everyone else is what has kept me coming back to volunteer. There are the public facing aspects that people are very kind in repeatedly thanking us for. But there are also all the little details that people don't notice, because it's a decision we made that prevented something from going wrong. Knowing that people had a better convention because of it is incredibly rewarding. In my day job I am somewhat removed from the customers who use what I create, and conventions provide an opportunity to directly see how the fruits of our labour affect our fellow con-goers. That makes me very happy.

We’ve been out asking our volunteers what it is they enjoy about volunteering, and why they’ve decided to join the Dublin team. Shiela is part of Bid Enablement team, who are making sure everything’s running smoothly and keeping us all on track 🫶

“I’ve been volunteering in one form or another since high school. I’ve picked up a lot of CV-enhancing skills along the way, but the biggest draw for me now is the sense of community that volunteering creates.

Volunteering feels a bit like assembling a band of unlikely heroes. People arrive with different talents, stories, and strengths, and somehow - through shared effort and a bit of determination - we conjure something greater than any one of us could create alone. It’s a kind of everyday magic. In a world that can sometimes feel a little fragmented, finding spaces where people come together with purpose and kindness feels like stepping into a hidden realm.

That’s why I’m so excited to be volunteering for Dublin 2029. The Worldcon community is one of the most welcoming and diverse I’ve ever encountered. I’ve met people from all over the world, each bringing their own kind of brilliance - whether it’s creativity, knowledge, or a generosity of spirit (or all 3).

We may be drawn together by a shared love of science fiction and/or fantasy, but it’s our differences that make this community so vibrant. It’s less about one grand quest and more about a thousand small sparks of magic, woven together into something truly special. If you’re interested in being part of this, please volunteer – I can’t wait to meet you!”

Come help us weave a spell over Dublin and volunteer with us 🩵 Our amazing Volunteers team will find the perfect space for you - https://dublin2029.ie/sign-up-to-volunteer

☘️ Curiosity, Authenticity and Solidarity 🇮🇪

Thank you to everyone that took part in this year’s all-hands, both in-person and online!

We’ve all gathered at the crossroads, and over the weekend we’ve planned heists, discussed special guests and events, built jigsaws, created stories and explored Dublin.

We hope everyone is filled to the brim with new ideas and excitement, and remember - Always Be Con-running
