This week, the APA Latinos and Planning Division announced the release of the Latino Community Engagement Guide.

Engagement isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach. Every community is different, especially the Latino community. Authored by private and public sector planners across the country—and led by MIG’s very own Marco Hinojosa, AICP—the guide was made possible by a grant from the APA and provides actionable strategies and insights to foster meaningful and inclusive engagement with Latino communities.

Moving forward, the LAP Division plans to host webinars to review the guide, and will have the guide available on their website early next year. They were able to use the remaining funds from the grant to print out copies of the guide and send them to planning departments across the country who expressed a need for it.

At the National Planning Conference, LAP hosted "Puentes: Bridging Healing and Revitalization in Latine Neighborhoods." Attendees traveled through South Minneapolis across East Lake Street stopping at select locations meeting Latine community-based organizations and leaders where for over 70 years have built programs and services empowering the community for social, political and economic change. Of course, it wouldn't be an LAP tour without food so we ended with fresh tamales thanks to MIG, Inc.!

Special thanks to LAP Immediate Past Chair Vidal Marquez, LAP Past Chair Edna Ely-Ledesma, and Adrian Diaz Jr.

It's Black History Month and the LAP is celebrating by highlighting Black and/or Afro-Latino individuals and communities!

Today, we're celebrating a location very familiar to the LAP familia, Philadelphia's Centro de Oro!

Did you know, the relationship between Philadelphia and the Caribbean spans over centuries? Sugar and to***co were numerous and migration of cigar workers from Puerto Rico and Cuba allowed for an initial Spanish-speaking population in the city.

Fast forward to today, Philadelphia's Centro de Oro neighborhood is home to many third- and fourth-generation family-owned businesses, international arts and cultural organizations and residents descending from PR and Latin America.

At the 2023 National Planning Conference, the LAP familia toured the neighborhood, organized by Past-Chair Vidal Marquez. We were able to visit Taller Puertorriqueño and Delicias Bakery to learn about (and taste!) the flavor of the neighborhood!

It's Black History Month and the Latinos and Planning Division is celebrating by highlighting Black and/or Afro-Latino individuals and communities!

Next up, we're celebrating two historic movies that portray what many Latino communities can relate to. West Side Story and In The Heights have themes of immigration, belonging, gentrification, and more. Although both films are not immune to the lack of Black and Latino representation in popular media, they are both set in historically Afro-Caribbean neighborhoods in New York City. These films, including their praises and criticisms, bring attention to the realities that many Black- and/or Afro-Latino communities face.

If you have not watched them already, think about the role planning plays in the context and plot!
