In celebration of Restorative Justice week, we wanted to highlight one of partners, Koinonia Leadership Academy!

Dr. Talaya L Tolefree is the founder and CEO of Koinonia Leadership Academy. Through Koinonia Leadership Academy, she provides leadership development with relationship building, strategic planning, restorative practices consulting, coaching, mentoring, training, and implementation. Dr. Tolefree believes education is a human right and should occur in safe, inclusive and empathetic environments. She specializes in school-based restorative practices to improve school climate and transform punitive educational practices into restorative and healing spaces.

In collaboration with Koinonia, we created our Youth Leadership cohort which provides an opportunity for high school age youth in the Twin Cities area to develop an understanding of restorative ways of being and to build cross-cultural relationships and leadership skills. Additionally, we collaborate with our Youth Circles which focuses on youth ages 14-18 who are on supervised probation in Hennepin County Juvenile Court.

It is Restorative Justice Week!

In Celebration of this week, we wanted to share a graphic image created by Wilder Research from the words of volunteers, board members, and conference referred participants of RJCA.

On October 9, 2026 Wilder Research facilitated a graphic recording session with Restorative Justice Community Action (RJCA) volunteers, board members, and conference referred participants. The group discussed a series of questions about the impacts of RJCA’s work on them as individuals, their relationships, their communities, and the justice system as a whole. During the discussion a graphic notetaker documented the conversation visually and another Wilder Research staff member took notes. This discussion resulted in a visual image of the impact of RJCA across multiple domains, as well as this summary of the themes discussed during the session.

The themes described in this report emerged from a simple thematic content analysis that involved listening to a recording of the discussion, reading over the notes to get a sense of the whole, and analyzing the visual image. Next, text from the notes and recording were sorted into “buckets” that reflected the topic, such as “individual impacts” or “shifts in perception.” Then, these topics were combined or further elaborated to elicit themes. Each of them is described below and includes supporting quotations from the participants.
