Meet Miki from Team Sally!
When asked what he would tell someone thinking about joining Mile in My Shoes, Miki’s answer was simple:
“Come change your life. Understand that you can be greater than you were yesterday. It’s a community — you’re never alone.”
Since joining MiMS, Miki has embraced every opportunity to grow. This season, he stepped into the role of Team Captain, leading warmups and cooldowns each week with confidence, positivity, and encouragement. His willingness to lead and support others has made a lasting impact on his teammates and helped strengthen the sense of community that makes Team Sally so special.
Miki says he’s most proud of the consistency he’s built, showing up on time, keeping his energy high, and understanding what he’s capable of achieving. Through running and community, he’s discovered a greater potential within himself and found inspiration in being surrounded by people who are committed to becoming better than they were yesterday.
One of Miki’s favorite MiMS memories was crossing the finish line at the Run More Judge Less 5K.
“The food, the people, the energy, the music, the way we all uplifted each other. This is all new to me, so I’m very grateful for the opportunity.”
What Miki values most is the connection he has found with others—sharing goals, encouraging one another, and building a community where everyone is striving to grow.
Thank you, Miki, for the leadership, enthusiasm, and heart you bring to Team Sally! We’re grateful you’re a part of the MiMS family!

The energy at the Run More, Judge Less races was pure magic!

It was wet, but our runners were unstoppable and sprits high as we crossed our first MiMS finish line at the Minnesota State Fair grounds. It was a celebration of the hard work, determination, and courage of our Members along with our shared commitment to creating a more inclusive running community.

We had 828 runners register for the Run More, Judge Less races but the number we are most proud of is this one: 369. That's how many free registration codes were used by Mile in My Shoes Members, BIPOC, unhoused, veteran and justice-impacted runners, and those without the financial ability to pay. That means, 48% percent of registrants were individuals traditionally excluded from running spaces.

We celebrated our FIRST and 1500th MEMBER at the race. Dave, Alumni Member Team Higher Ground, was MiMS' very first Resident Member. Now diagnosed with Huntington's Disease, movement has become increasingly challenging for Dave. But, on Thursday, he RAN across the 1-mile finish line alongside his Team Higher Ground Mentors Andy and Michelle, followed by his friend Doug pushing his empty wheelchair. "This is a man who can barely stay upright when walking, and yet the second his feet hit that course, something in him woke up," said Doug. "Watching him run was like watching muscle memory and joy take over his whole body. And he finished. He crossed that line with people cheering him on at the finish surrounded by runners who know exactly what he’s overcome."

Ashenafi, Resident Member and MiMS' 1500th Runner, Team UGMTC, "This was my 23rd run this season. This race was hard but I'm so proud I finished!"
From the very first run Union Gospel Mission Twin Cities , Ashenafi has brought infectious joy to his teammates, showing up to 6am runs with a smile. Even before becoming Team Captain, Ashenafi's been supporting his teammates each morning, knocking on their doors to see if they were coming to the run."

If there is one thing we know how to do at Mile in My Shoes (besides running), it's celebrate! And tomorrow is one of our biggest celebrations of the season: the Run More, Judge Less Races (5K/1M/Challenge/Kids Race). Want to join us? It’s not too late - see the link in our bio!

This event is not just a race; it's a celebration of the hard work, consistency, and community that our teams have built so far this season, and the ways that they have shown up for themselves and one another.

Twice a month, each of our teams have "Celebration Runs" where our team Celebration Coordinators lead us in celebrating accomplishments across the team. We celebrate milestones like earning Blue Shirts, Alumni status, or the coveted orange hoodie at 50 runs, but we also celebrate other accomplishments running related or not: job interviews, graduations, birthdays, move-outs, and more!

One new Team Roseville Alumni shared that celebrations have "helped me with goal setting! The positive reinforcement encourages me to keep going."

For many MiMS Members, the Run More, Judge Less Races will be their first race or 5k. Others will celebrate a new goal time, or simply the fact that they've kept showing up. This event is one big Celebration Run, and we’ll be there to meet you at the finish line with cheers and cookies!

We can’t wait to see you there.

Happy Global Running! Today we celebrate the transformative power of movement to improve personal wellness and connect communities. For Mile in My Shoes teams of over 100 Resident Members - individuals experiencing homelessness and other barriers - and nearly 200 Run Mentors, running is a tool for both individual and community transformation.

During a weekly run last night, one Resident Member at our reentry team, Team Roseville, explained it perfectly: "To me, MiMS is about connection. This is about people moving beside each other when things are really hard. People who stick with you when things are really tough are not going to give up on you. So I'm not going to give up either."

As our Run More Judge Less 5K quickly approaches, MiMS Members are reflecting on goals. "There was a point in my life when I could run a 28-minute 5K. That's not where I'm at today and I'm okay with that. Being here with this team has given me something else. I'm learning to appreciate my body in new ways - for it's strength and it's fight. These legs have been through a lot but they keep carrying me forward and every step is proof of that."

Since day one of Mile in My Shoes, has been a huge part of this community. From providing running gear for our Resident Members to recruiting Run Mentors, volunteering, fundraising, and bringing their energetic running community alongside ours, they’ve helped grow this movement every step of the way.

Register for the Run More, Judge Less 5K on June 11 and come see this partnership in action!

Mill City Running’s long-time support has helped more MiMS Resident Members get to the starting line while also helping the broader running community better understand homelessness, recovery, and reentry. Big thanks to Mill City for amplifying voices that are too often left out of traditional running spaces.

And if you’ve ever been around Mill City Running, you know they bring the ENERGY! 🔥

That’s exactly why race day with Mill City feels electric. You’ll see their crew everywhere: running the course, course marshaling, cheering, handing out finish line food, and bringing the hype with the legendary Mill City Pep Band! 🎺

This partnership is one of the things that makes the Run More, Judge Less race so joyful, welcoming, high-energy, and deeply connected. Come run with us on June 11!

Register for the 5K, 1M, or kids race at link in bio!

Behind every starting line is a community of people and partners helping make the miles possible 💙

We’re incredibly grateful to RBC Wealth Management and SWIM (See What I Mean) for their investment in this year’s Run More, Judge Less 5K.

Both organizations share a deep commitment to strengthening communities, creating meaningful connections, and investing in people. Their support of Mile in My Shoes goes far beyond sponsorship dollars —employees from both organizations have dedicated their time and energy as Run Mentors, Board Members, and champions of our mission, helping our community grow year after year.

Because of those direct connections to our program, they get to see the impact of their support firsthand: the confidence built through movement, the relationships formed on team runs, and the power of creating spaces where everyone belongs.

From showing up alongside our Members to helping expand opportunities for wellness, connection, and belonging, these partnerships have made a lasting impact both on and off the course.

Want to be part of it too? Register for the Run More, Judge Less 5K and join us at the starting line! (Link in bio)

Teams UGMTC and Roseville had their first social events of the season this week, spending time playing disc golf and pickleball. Our teams are all about building connection, but social events set the stage to do this in a unique way.

One Team UGMTC mentor shared that they love social events because they have a way of bringing out previously unknown gifts and talents, and sometimes “flip the script”; a Member might become the expert while the Mentor is out there flinging the frisbee in the wrong direction.

Take Member Ricky, who taught his clueless team what the “kitchen” is on a pickleball court, or Isack who quickly made a stranger at the court his doubles partner (and they won)!

These shared experiences broaden and deepen our community at MiMS Roles shift, people show up differently, and we get chances to learn new things about disc golf but also about each other.
