Today’s Entrepreneur Spotlight Celebrates Ana Gonzalez, CEO of Piece of Love: You rebuilt after disruption, reopened with intention, and transformed a setback into renewed momentum and growth.

We're recognizing and congratulating Ana Gonzalez - CEO of Piece of Love https://www.lrcmke.com/piece-of-love-thriveon

Piece of Love is one of the Greater Milwaukee Foundation ThriveOn Small Business Loan clients that has completed the required technical assistance process with Legacy Redevelopment Corporation.

“When a hit-and-run forced my business to shut down for over a year, ThriveOn gave me the support to start again. The funding helped me reopen, rehire, and rebuild, while the coaching kept me focused and motivated as a solo owner.”

After a hit-and-run forced Piece of Love to close its cake shop for more than a year, owner Ana Gonzalez and her business entered one of the most difficult seasons in their history. Ana turned to the Greater Milwaukee Foundation’s ThriveOn Loan Program for support, using the capital to rebuild, scale, and reopen the business as an expanded venture while retaining the mobile coffee truck.

Since its grand reopening in June 2025, Piece of Love has experienced strong growth, quickly returning to pre-closure levels of customer traffic while introducing new service lines such as private events, date nights, and catering. The loan supported early payroll, staff training, inventory, marketing, and the relaunch of operations.

With added technical assistance through Legacy Redevelopment Corporation and guidance from Terese and Angelique, Ana strengthened her financial systems, improved operations, and moved forward with renewed confidence and a clear long-term vision.

Next is Bendell Lee, CEO of Freeway Acres: You made a strategic pivot when the numbers spoke and built a more sustainable, efficient business model.

We're recognizing and congratulating Bendell Lee - CEO of Freeway Acres https://www.lrcmke.com/freeway-acres-thriveon

Freeway Acres is one of the Greater Milwaukee Foundation ThriveOn Small Business Loan clients that has completed the required technical assistance process with Legacy Redevelopment Corporation.

“What I initially thought was a good idea, turned out to not be as lucrative as we had hoped. Our ThriveOn loan allowed us to pivot and steer the business in a slightly different direction, and now we are thriving on!” Bendell Lee - CEO of Freeway Acres.

Freeway Acres, a junk removal and hauling business owned by Bendell Lee, was built to meet a growing demand for reliable, affordable hauling services. Bendell initially sought support from the ThriveOn Loan Program to purchase a trailer and expand operations through a traditional junk removal model that relied on training and deploying staff to job sites. As the business grew, ongoing challenges with staffing and retention made it difficult to scale in a way that was sustainable.

Access to ThriveOn capital gave Bendell the flexibility to pause, reassess, and pivot strategically rather than push forward with a model that was no longer working. Instead of relying on a large field crew, Freeway Acres shifted to a trailer rental and haul-away model, allowing contractors and customers to fill the trailer themselves while Bendell’s team handles drop-off and disposal.

This pivot reduced labor strain, stabilized operations, and created a more efficient, scalable business. Today, Freeway Acres operates with a smaller team and a stronger model built for long-term sustainability and growth.

Our ThriveOn loan allowed us to recover from that set back without compromising our services and operations during a period that could have otherwise jeopardized the business.” ~Jen Becker CEO of MOD Ledger
