A new book just entered our museum shop and library! ๐Ÿ“–

"Memoir of a Revolutionary Solider: The Narrative of Joseph Plumb Martin" is the story of a wide-eyed teenager during the Revolutionary War. Martin left his grandfatherโ€™s Connecticut farm in 1775 to join the Continental Army. His notes, penned when he was seventy, recount in grim detail his harrowing experiences during the conflict. Martin also recounts the lively experiences of hunting, fishing, and other diversions โ€“ including the occasional romance.

On 6 June 1944, over 160,000 soldiers from the United States, Great Britain, and Canada landed on the beaches and fields of Normandy, France in Operation Neptune, the largest amphibious military operation ever. The success of this operation depended on massive and meticulous coordination between multiple countries and naval, airborne and land forces; deception operations and weather. The Commander of Allied Forces, General Dwight Eisenhower wrote the below letter to forces involved and met with troops of the 101st Airborne before their departure for France. The success of this operation signaled the beginning of the defeat of Germany in World War II.
