Exchange for Change

Exchange for Change Want to read our students' work? Buy Don't Shake the Spoon Volume II here: https://tinyurl.com/dstsvolii. Our programs emphasize collaboration.

Exchange for Change, a Miami-based nonprofit, provides writing courses and anonymous letter exchanges that connect incarcerated and free student writers and forges bonds on both sides of the fence We believe in the value of every voice, and that strong, safe communities are formed when everyone has the ability to listen and be heard. Exchange for Change is committed to promoting dialogue across so

cial and institutional barriers and, particularly, to collaborating with imprisoned writers to foster empathy and create individual and social change. Our programs help individual writers realize the value of their own experiences, increase public awareness about the causes and effects of incarceration, and create opportunities for shared action toward social change. We provide opportunities for creative, intellectual engagement through writing. Students inside the justice system are given a voice and an opportunity to express themselves without worrying about being stigmatized, a first-time experience for many. Students on the outside learn from the knowledge and experiences of their inside writing partners, and both groups have the opportunity to listen to and engage with voices and perspectives they may otherwise never encounter. Students can express themselves anonymously, across different communities, to develop their individual voices and talents in order to become agents of change within their own communities.

We’re honored that our Founder and Executive Director Kathie Klarreich was featured on Key Biscayne Stories Podcast to talk about the heart of our work.

On the podcast, Kathie shares what Exchange for Change is all about: bringing college-level writing and education into Florida’s prisons, and the students whose voices are at the center of it all.

It’s a conversation about learning, dignity, and the power of second chances on both sides of the fence.

Give it a listen - link is in our bio. And thank you to the team for shining a light on this work🙏

We are still smiling. 🦋

Last night, the 100+ Women Who Care Miami Beach chose Exchange for Change as their grant recipient, and we could not be more grateful.

What makes this gift so special is how it came to be. Every dollar came from women who chose to pool their giving and place their trust in our students. To be chosen by a room full of thoughtful, generous women means the world to us.

Our Operations Manager Parker shared her story, from student inside Homestead to standing before the room as a leader today. As she reminded everyone, she is not the exception. There are women in a classroom at Homestead right now who are exactly where she once was, and the only difference is whether the class exists. This gift is what keeps those classrooms open.

To the 100 Women Who Care Miami Beach ,thank you for believing in our students. Our door is always open, and we hope you will stay close to this work🧡

An unforgettable evening at Books & Books for the launch of The Light Within the Walls by C.P. Handler, LCSW.

Our Executive Director Kathie Klarreich led the panel, in conversation with C.P. alongside our Board Chair Dan Wynne, Michael “Rondo” Bonilla, and KP, for an honest, moving discussion about young people in the justice system and the people fighting for them.

A full house and so many powerful moments. C.P., thank you for this book and for telling these stories with such heart. We were honored to be part of your night. Your work matters.

This book opens hearts and minds. We hope you’ll read it.

E4C Board member and FIU Dean Ana Luszczynska hosted colleagues for an intimate evening last month to support the mission of Exchange for Change. FIU faculty and friends learned more about the power of education and how it changes the lives of those in our carceral setting.

E4C alumni Leeann Parker, who is E4C’s new Operations Manager, brought the message home when she said, "Exchange for Change was a lifesaver, a game changer."

Some of the most meaningful moments happen when people come together to listen, learn, and grow. Prison Visits remind us that change begins with connection.

In partnership with The Fredrick Douglass Project for Justice, we bring community members inside both men’s and women’s prisons to engage with our students and learn.
