Exchange for Change, a Miami-based nonprofit, provides writing courses and anonymous letter exchanges that connect incarcerated and free student writers and forges bonds on both sides of the fence We believe in the value of every voice, and that strong, safe communities are formed when everyone has the ability to listen and be heard. Exchange for Change is committed to promoting dialogue across so

cial and institutional barriers and, particularly, to collaborating with imprisoned writers to foster empathy and create individual and social change. Our programs help individual writers realize the value of their own experiences, increase public awareness about the causes and effects of incarceration, and create opportunities for shared action toward social change. We provide opportunities for creative, intellectual engagement through writing. Students inside the justice system are given a voice and an opportunity to express themselves without worrying about being stigmatized, a first-time experience for many. Students on the outside learn from the knowledge and experiences of their inside writing partners, and both groups have the opportunity to listen to and engage with voices and perspectives they may otherwise never encounter. Students can express themselves anonymously, across different communities, to develop their individual voices and talents in order to become agents of change within their own communities.

We are in the news!!!

just published a beautiful piece on the power of education and writing programs inside correctional facilities - and Exchange for Change is featured alongside Incarcerated Writer’s Bureau.

We are so grateful for this spotlight and for the voices of our students being heard beyond the prison walls.

This is exactly why we do what we do💙

A couple of weeks ago we had the most beautiful morning at the Community Yoga Gathering at Miami Beach Botanical Garden 🌿

We came together as part of the series - for yoga, connection, and a shared reminder of why this work matters.

This event is especially close to our hearts as it reflects the same mindfulness work we facilitate with women at Homestead Correctional Institution each week. Same spirit, different setting.

A huge thank you to the for opening their doors to us, and to all our wonderful partners who co-created this experience with us:

And to everyone who joined us - we are so grateful. More to come! 🦋

Exciting things are happening this May!🌞

We are thrilled to be collaborating with The Children’s Trust Youth Advisory Committee on their May Field Trip - a Reentry Simulation Experience at Florida International University on May 16.

Young people will step into real-life scenarios to build awareness, leadership, and life skills around reentry and community impact. It is exactly the kind of work that aligns with our mission, building bridges of understanding and empathy across our community.

Proud to be part of this and grateful to for this collaboration!

Exchange for Change is helping the administration at Homestead Correctional Institution look for a sponsor for their Gavel Club.

💡More than two dozen women are developing their skills and growing their confidence by participating in this program, which needs a sponsor to help them with accruing Toastmaster resources, materials and guidance.

Two very special events are coming up as part of the series with

Most of us have never set foot inside a prison, and that distance makes it easy to forget the people inside. This is your chance to change that!

Join us for an intimate, small-group conversation with incarcerated students inside Everglades Correctional Institution and Homestead Correctional Institution. Past visitors describe it as one of the most impactful experiences of their lives because it reminded them of the humanity we all share.

Come with an open mind, and leave transformed. 🕊️

🗓 May 4 | Everglades CI | 3–5 PM
🗓 May 6 | Homestead CI | 3–5 PM

👉 Space is limited to 15 participants per visit. Registration closes two weeks before each event - sign up early via the link in bio!
