Exchange for Change, a Miami-based nonprofit, provides writing courses and anonymous letter exchanges that connect incarcerated and free student writers and forges bonds on both sides of the fence We believe in the value of every voice, and that strong, safe communities are formed when everyone has the ability to listen and be heard. Exchange for Change is committed to promoting dialogue across social and institutional barriers and, particularly, to collaborating with imprisoned writers to foster empathy and create individual and social change. Our programs help individual writers realize the value of their own experiences, increase public awareness about the causes and effects of incarceration, and create opportunities for shared action toward social change. We provide opportunities for creative, intellectual engagement through writing. Students inside the justice system are given a voice and an opportunity to express themselves without worrying about being stigmatized, a first-time experience for many. Students on the outside learn from the knowledge and experiences of their inside writing partners, and both groups have the opportunity to listen to and engage with voices and perspectives they may otherwise never encounter. Students can express themselves anonymously, across different communities, to develop their individual voices and talents in order to become agents of change within their own communities.

Through her involvement at the University of Miami in student organizations, Jayne Salama talks about how one experience inspired her to stay involved, continue building community, and create greater change.
Jayne is currently supporting us by doing outreach for our prison visits, helping us engage more of the Miami community to participate in this unique opportunity.

We spent this past weekend in Montgomery, Alabama for the 5th Annual Bob Moses Legacy Conference: Remaking America, The Work Before Us.

Held at the Equal Justice Initiative Legacy Sites, it gathered educators, organizers, and advocates from across the country around the work Bob Moses gave his life to: education, democracy, and the fight against mass incarceration.

Three days of hard conversations, in a city that holds a lot of this country’s history.

So good to be there together: our Executive Director Kathie Klarreich, Board Member Dr. Ana M. Luszczynska, Dean of the School of Environment, Arts and Society at Florida International University, and Marni Lennon, Assistant Dean for Public Interest and Pro Bono at the University of Miami School of Law and a longtime friend of Exchange for Change🧡

Fall 2026 classes are officially underway at Homestead and Everglades Correctional Institutions!

This fall, students are engaging in courses that encourage creativity, critical thinking, and personal growth.

This past weekend, we hosted our Facilitator Orientation to kick off the Fall semester.

We are so excited to bring more than 40 courses to our incarcerated students across eight institutions. Our facilitators make it possible, and we're beyond grateful for the care and dedication they bring.
