Annual fire inspections will begin soon for businesses throughout the City of Kiel.

These inspections are part of our ongoing fire prevention efforts and are required under City of Kiel ordinance. The Kiel Fire Department is responsible for establishing a fire inspection schedule for public buildings and places of employment, with at least one inspection each calendar year and no more than 15 months between inspections.

The goal of these inspections is not to disrupt your business. The goal is to identify and correct hazards before they become emergencies.

Common items we look for include:

• Clear and accessible exits
• Working exit signs and emergency lighting
• Fire extinguishers that are visible, accessible, and properly serviced
• Electrical panels with proper clearance
• Extension cords not being used as permanent wiring
• Fire alarm, sprinkler, and suppression systems being maintained and inspected when applicable
• Safe storage of combustible materials
• Address numbers and access points that are visible for emergency responders

These items are consistent with common NFPA fire and life safety guidelines and help protect employees, customers, visitors, responders, and property.

Business owners can help by taking a few minutes to walk through their building before the inspection. Make sure exits are not blocked, extinguishers are accessible, electrical rooms are clear, and required inspection or service tags are up to date.

We appreciate the cooperation of our local businesses as we work together to keep Kiel safe.
