We live, love, and learn in community. In March, that means a trip to see the 🌷tulips🌷 at ! The garden display features over 70 varieties of tulips, along with their other amazing 🌹gardens🌺. REP's adult ESOL students and their coaches passed several hours roaming the 🌸flowers🌼 and discussing colors, shapes, smells, sights, and other descriptive terms they have been studying in the classroom. We all love sunshine and being in nature, and it is all the sweeter when we can learn literacy and life lessons along the way. ☀️🌳

We recognize that dynamic, interactive, and engaging activities and lessons are crucial for successful and fulfilling programs, and we are thankful to Dixon Gardens for helping make trips like these possible! To learn more about our programs here at REP or for information about how you can help our mission through gifts or volunteering, please visit our website at www.repmemphis.org. ❤️💙

Join us on the afternoon of Sunday, March 8 for our 5th Annual International Women’s Day Party! On this day, we celebrate women - the heart of our community. IWD is a time for joy, community, and celebration!

At REP, we remain committed to celebrating our mission, but our reality has changed. In 2026, we will lose 60% of our operating budget due to sweeping state and federal budget cuts. As we adapt to the times, we hope you will invest in us, too. We are working tirelessly to cover the 600k funding gap, while also trying to meet increased community needs with even fewer resources. We stand firm in our commitments, and we need you to believe in us, too.

This Sunday, March 8, we will again celebrate beauty, shared stories, traditions, and more, reminding us all that empowering women strengthens our community. IWD 2026 theme is 'Give To Gain.’

Event Objectives: 1) Honor refugee and immigrant women in Memphis; 2) Provide a nurturing space for connections and community; 3) Raise funds and awareness to support REP’s programs.

Program Highlights: 1) Welcome remarks; recognition of leaders & participants; 2) Storytelling sessions led by refugee women; 3) Wellness, education, and empowerment resource booths; 4) Cultural performances and creative expression segments; 5) Food, refreshments, and community networking; 6) Fundraising and donor engagement opportunities.

Intended Impact: 1) Increased sense of belonging and empowerment; 2) Strengthened community partnerships; 3) More awareness of women’s experiences and contributions; 4) Donations to strengthen sustainability in 2026.

After-School Advocate: $25 supports our dynamic after-school enrichment program for over 300 K-12 students.
English Language Enthusiast: $50 supports Adult Education, including literacy, workforce skills, and more.

"A nearly blind Burmese refugee who was abandoned by border patrol agents has been found dead in Buffalo, New York, city officials confirmed.

Nurul Amin Shah Alam, 56, had been missing since 19 February, when he was dropped off by border patrol following his release from Erie county holding center, according to the Investigative Post.

A city hall spokesperson, Ian Ott, told the Investigative Post that homicide detectives are “investigating the circumstances and timeframe of events leading up to his death, following his release from custody”.

Shah Alam had been in the Erie county holding center for the past year, after being arrested by Buffalo police in 2025 on charges of assault, trespassing and possession of a weapon. The arrest stemmed from an incident in which Shah Alam got lost while on a walk and ended up on the porch of a woman’s home. He had been using a curtain rod as a walking stick, according to his attorney.

The woman called the police, and when Shah Alam did not follow police commands to drop his curtain rod, they tasered and beat him, his attorney said.

He was released on bail, and then transferred to border patrol custody.

Border patrol agents then dropped him off at a Tim Hortons about five miles from his home. Neither his attorney nor his family were notified of his release.

“We are saddened to learn that our client, Nurul Amin Shah Alam, was found deceased last night in the City of Buffalo,” the Legal Aid Bureau of Buffalo said in a statement shared with the Guardian.

The organization said that they have received several inquiries regarding more information on Shah Alam, and due to ethical obligations, they are unable to provide any further comment at this time.

Michael Niezgoda, a spokesperson for US Customs and Border Protection, the parent agency of border patrol, did not immediately respond on Wednesday to a request for comment from the Guardian.

Shah Alam arrived in Buffalo 15 months ago, in December 2024. He is survived by his wife and two sons."

This year was hard.
It was hardest on the people.
It was hard on our team.
It was hard on the organization.

We slammed the door on refugees.
We scapegoated immigrants.
We turned away “the least of these.”

This year, we learned to GRIEVE.
Together. Aloud. In our way.

In our grief, we found STRENGTH.
We grieve because we LOVE.

We love People.
We love Empowerment.
We love Memphis.

Our boundless grief is not only a sign of great loss.
It is also a sign of our unwavering conviction, faith, and courage.
It is a sign of our mutual dedication to community.

We know LOVE wins.
We are DETERMINED to love.
We are determined to WIN.

BUT, WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!
In 2026, we will lose 50% of our budget due to federal and state cuts.
As we plan and prepare for this impending reality, our mission continues.

Below, we share three inspirations taking us into the new year.
We hope they also bring you encouragement. 🫶🏿
The 1st is Scripture, Matthew 25:35-40.
The 2nd is a quote by Lao Tzu.
The 3rd is "The New Colossus," Emma Lazarus's poem for the Statue of Liberty.

(1) For I was hungry
and you gave me something to eat.
I was thirsty
and you gave me something to drink.
I was a stranger
and you invited me in.
I needed clothes
and you clothed me.
I was sick
and you looked after me.
I was in prison
and you came to visit me...
The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.'

(2) Go to the people.
Live with them.
Learn from them.
Love them.
Start with what they know.
Build with what they have.
But with the best leaders,
when the work is done,
the task accomplished,
people will say,
'We have done this ourselves."

(3) Give me your tired,
your poor,
Your huddled masses
yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these,
the homeless,
tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door.
