As a token of our appreciation, we’re excited to share a special gift with you - a cherished family recipe from Talbert Fleming of Jim & Samella’s House, located at 841 Bullington Ave, Memphis, TN 38106, in the heart of the historic Soulsville community in Memphis.

Talbert is more than a talented chef; he is a pillar of the community, a long-standing advocate, and someone who has proudly represented Soulsville/South Memphis on a national stage. Most of the dishes on his menu are made from scratch and honor his grandmother, Samella Fleming, the grand matriarch and cook of the family.

Born in 1961, Talbert grew up as one of only three Black families on Bullington Street in South Memphis. His grandmother was the mother of the block — babysitting the children of working parents, feeding and clothing anyone in need, and treating every child in the neighborhood as extended family. These traditions, rooted in love and community care, shaped Talbert’s life and continue to guide his work today.
He carries these values forward as a tribute to how his grandmother kept both the family and the community thriving.

— Story excerpt adapted from “At The Family Table” by Melonee Gaines for Edible Memphis.

At the Center for Transforming Communities (CTC), we are committed to uplifting the voices, gifts, and cultural traditions of the neighborhoods we walk alongside. Sharing this recipe is one small way we honor the rich history, creativity, and community leadership that make Soulsville so vibrant.

We hope this dish brings warmth to your home and reminds you of the power of community connection. Thank you for your continued support of CTC’s mission and the residents we serve.

Strengthening Neighborhoods from the Inside

Center for Transforming Communities’ vision is that every Memphis neighborhood becomes a place anyone would gladly call home. Center for Transforming Communities (CTC) believes that the strengthening of neighborhoods is a core component in Memphis’ advancement to becoming a 21st century city. And, CTC believes that a missing ingredient among the efforts to revitalize and strengthen distressed neighborhoods is a complementary, mutually reinforcing relationship between institutions impacting neighborhoods and the citizens within those neighborhoods. To that end, the impact that CTC seeks to have is an increase in neighborhood voice, power and inclusion in decision-making at all levels.

Since 2010, CTC has been building expertise in place-based relational organizing that prepares the community to have a voice in decisions that impact their neighborhood. We have also gained experience and expertise assisting institutions to include that resident voice. We are eager to build upon this expertise and assist Memphis in building its capacity and infrastructure for incorporating and valuing community voices and participation in decision-making. We believe it is a vital, yet often overlooked ingredient, for an effective community development eco-system in Memphis. CTC is eager to change this!
