We love being outside, traipsing trails, and making sure our footprint is as small as possible. If you’ve found us here, there’s a good chance you feel similarly. To that end, we're launching a perpetual, year-round commitment to keeping our beloved outdoor spaces sacred and serene. It's part of a life-long commitment to trails, and a commitment about which we're endlessly psyched. As they do with any noble project grand in scheme and scope, many hands make light work. 11 days ago Ponderosa State Park Manager Matt Linde* told us we were all set for our 8th annual Sasquatch Shuffle trail run festivities. Three days ago we received a bunch of lip service and misinformation. This morning Matt Stebbins saw active fires next to our permitted course, breathed terrible air, and talked to multiple SITPA reps (the folks managing the burning in the Park) who said no one should be running these trails until the first snowfall in McCall.

Disappointed is an epic understatement, and if there was anything we could have done to change the reality and the impromptu timeline of these burns, please know we would have waved those proverbial wands. As such, not everything is awesome all of the time and not all public land managers are either.

Guess what *is* awesome, though? That we get to run in beautiful places, come what may.

In the spirit of making some timely lemonade, then — For anyone already in town looking to run on Saturday, keep an eye on your inboxes for details about an impromptu group run of sorts in the area. And keep your eyes peeled for Sasquatch sightings.

Thanks again to everyone who has sent wonderful messages of support already this morning. This community really is something special and we’re oh so grateful for it (and for all of you).

Hey trail friends & fam,

We have news that is equal parts bittersweet and full to the brim with gratitude: The Carkeek 12-Hour—our oldest race and the toughest 12-hour out there—is hanging up its trail shoes after 20 years.

This October 24th we’re closing it out the only way we know how: One more loop (and bonus “short loops!”), one more costume, one (or 20) more “Why did I sign up for this?” moment at Carkeek Park.

Mark your calendars, because you won’t get another shot at this one.

For two decades, Carkeek has humbled runners with its brutal, stair-filled and utterly scenic 1.93-mile loop (plus the truly unhinged 0.54-mile short loop, for anyone who has lost the plot entirely). It’s earned its reputation as the toughest 12-hour around via lots of climbing, lots of unpredictable fall weather, and lots of Type 2 Fun.

This October, we’d love to fill that park with every runner who’s ever loved—or loved to hate—this race. Whether you’ve done it every year since 2007 or you’ve always meant to give it a try, this is the year.

As always, every entry fee and donation goes straight back into supporting Northwest trails through our nonprofit work—so signing up means one last loop and one last legacy contribution via beloved Carkeek shenanigans.

Grab your costume, dust off your trekking poles, and get ready to climb until your legs stage a rebellion. 20 years of Carkeek deserves a proper send-off, and we want you there for it.
