Alongside Families

Alongside Families Alongside Families exists to connect isolated families to local church communities that champion family preservation and thriving. So the situation spirals.

https://linktr.ee/alongsidefamilies We exist to connect isolated families to local church communities that champion family preservation and physical, spiritual, and emotional thriving. We aim to keep families intact, prevent children from unnecessarily entering foster care during times of crisis, and build authentic, long-term relationships that empower families to thrive. What does it take to fra

cture a family? The answer is simple: a crisis such as homelessness, unemployment, or a parent being hospitalized, combined with a lack of friends or family who are able to provide the support the family needs right then. Children end up in the foster care system, and another family in Charlotte becomes a statistic. We are not okay with this. And we believe there is a better way. God created ALL of us with a need for community in order to thrive. If the problem is social isolation, the answer is community. Alongside Families mobilizes and equips local churches to open their families, their homes, their social networks, their resources, and their hearts to invite their isolated neighbors to life together within community. WHAT WE DO
- Mobilize the church to live out Christ’s love to isolated families in our community.
- Build relationships with families in need and provide connections to community resources and our social networks.
- Empower families to stay intact and gain stability and independence. HOW WE DO IT
- Connect families who are walking through hard times such as homelessness, medical or mental health challenges, or being overwhelmed as a parent, with compassionate volunteers in partner churches who are committed to family preservation.

- Temporarily host children whose parents need space and time to get back on their feet during a family crisis so that children don’t unnecessarily enter the foster care system. Parents maintain full custody of their children, and build friendships with the host family. Host Families are thoroughly screened and trained volunteers within local partnering churches who simply want to love their neighbors and keep families intact. Our goal is always family preservation. Hosting may be for a few days during a medical emergency, or for a few months when a parent needs more time to stabilize their situation.

- Provide supportive coaching and connection to resources for parents to help them reach their self-identified goals for family stability.

- Provide professional support and oversight so that volunteers can build long term, family-like relationships with isolated families that last far beyond the temporary hosting need. OUR HISTORY
Our team began partnering with local churches to serve isolated families in Charlotte in 2017 as part of a nationwide organization. In 2021 we became a locally headquartered nonprofit with the benefit of a local governing board and local management of funds to allow us to tailor our services to best meet the contextual needs of our local community. We continue to build upon and hone our gospel-centered model to provide new services and programs to help Charlotte families stabilize and thrive. OUR IMPACT
Our team of staff, volunteer, and partner churches has provided 160+ hostings to children whose parents were experiencing a crisis, provided 4,300+ nights of care, reunified 100% of children hosted with their parents, and built long-term, family-like relationships with isolated families who now have loving community to support them. COMMUNITY-FUELED
We believe that family preservation should be a priority of our community, and especially of the churches in our community. We live out love to our neighbors as a testimony to Christ's love. We are 100% privately funded by supporters, churches, volunteers, and local businesses who have a desire to champion gospel-centered family preservation and ensure that families in Charlotte stay together and thrive. Please consider joining us to fuel this ministry as a financial partner! https://www.alongsidefamilies.org/

Our Spring Staff Retreat was spent discussing best practices for moving from vision to activation. In other words, how can we help our volunteers, our church partners, and our agency connections take the next steps in their commitment to family preservation?

A key takeaway from this time together was a reminder of who we are: We are a pro-church ministry that connects our church partners to vulnerable families. We train and equip the Church; the Church engages with families to provide relational care and compassionate commitment beyond the crisis.

"We have to constantly be giving this ministry away to the Church." - COO Meghan Macy, M.Ed.

🎉Let's celebrate! 🎉

Ministry Coordinator Brooke Head did an exceptional job of sharing the mission of Alongside Families at the recent Ministry Fair held at Steele Creek Church! Over 20 people stopped by the table and took information, many sharing what a great calling this was for the church and sharing their experiences of working with vulnerable families. Several church members added their names to the signup sheet in addition to taking pictures of the QR code for volunteer and Interest Meeting opportunities.

We look forward to God doing a great work in the hearts of the Steele Creek family!

Elevation Church - Ballantyne's Local Outreach Launch was a tremendous encouragement for Alongside Families!

👉We were publicly recognized as a new ministry partner, and Elevation beautifully shared our mission of connecting isolated families to local church communities that champion family preservation.

👉They highlighted our work with single mothers, and shared a recent hosting story. The response was overwhelmingly positive, generating significant interest and engagement at our table throughout the evening.

👉The night culminated with Elevation presenting Alongside Families with a generous gift.

More than the financial support, the evening felt like a powerful affirmation of the work God is doing through churches across our city to strengthen and support vulnerable families. It was also an honor to stand alongside so many incredible churches, ministries, and organizations committed to serving those in need with compassion, proximity, presence, and purpose right here in our community.

We are deeply grateful for partnerships like these that remind us none of this work is done alone and that lasting impact happens when the Church comes together to care for families.

The call came at an inconvenient time. The need was urgent.

Right in the middle of our recent luncheon celebrating Ministry Coordinators and Family Coaches, we received a call on our support line. There was a family who had experienced domestic violence and the mom needed care for her 2 young children while she worked to find a safe place for them all. Without immediate support, the children risked entering the foster care system - not due to a lack of love, but a lack of stability and resources. A lack of community.

As Support Line Coordinator Carey Gordon described, "it was a wild and wonderful perfect 'storm' of urgent real-life needs entering the celebration of volunteers who had come together on mission to support families in dire situations."

Our Support Line Team is on the front lines, responding to families in need. Yes, the call might come at an inconvenient time. And yes, we're always ready to offer support, encouragement, and a listening ear.

From COO Meghan Macy, M.Ed.:

What an incredible time at the Nourish Up Luncheon of Hope this year alongside one of our newest church partners, Elevation Church - Ballantyne.

We are deeply grateful for the many times we have been able to connect families we serve through Alongside Families to the support, dignity, and care offered through Nourish Up. Their work continues to be such a meaningful resource in our city, and it was powerful to gather in a room full of people committed to loving neighbors well.

Hearing from Dawn Staley was especially impactful - a reminder that true leadership and service are rooted in lifting others up.

The entire luncheon was such a beautiful picture of organizations, churches, businesses, and community leaders coming together around hope, dignity, and practical support for families across Charlotte.

Thank you to Elevation Church for inviting us to be part of such a meaningful event and for your continued investment in organizations serving families across our city. We are looking forward to years of impact together.

What a delight to celebrate with our Ministry Coordinators and Family Coaches last week! Intern Emily Chebotnikova opened with prayer and Family Care Manager Kathryn Kiker shared her gifting with a beautiful worship song. Church Engagement Coordinator Vivian Richardson's niece, Melissa DuPont, presented a rendition of Psalm 139, reminding the gathering of who we are as children of God.

ELEVEN partner churches were represented at the event!

"(It) was so beautiful to see the Bride of Christ come together with worship, laughter, and breaking bread." - Vivian Richardson, Church Engagement Coordinator

Support Line Coordinator Carey Gordan recently shared a story about a phone call she received from a woman named *Deena.

Deena was extremely frustrated - she had called several community organizations trying to get help obtaining a simple household item. She had been met with unanswered phones, left messages that were never returned, and received a few responses of "we can't help with that". One organization required a referral from a partner agency, but Deena wasn't connected with any of the partners. Her frustration boiled over in her call to our support line.

Carey did what our Support Line Team always does - she listened. She didn't interrupt, judge, or rush off the phone. She let Deena vent and empathized with her irritation. Carey described how Deena's tone and breathing shifted after a short time; her anxiety lessened and her voice became calmer. Just the act of reaching someone on the other end of the phone had made a huge difference in this mom's crisis.

We want to be known as a community agency that answers the phone.

This is another way you can support the work of family preservation without hosting a child or mentoring a parent - it's a completely remote role, offers a flexible schedule, and doesn't require you to be connected to an Alongside partner church.
