Alongside Families

Alongside Families Alongside Families exists to connect isolated families to local church communities that champion family preservation and thriving. So the situation spirals.

https://linktr.ee/alongsidefamilies We exist to connect isolated families to local church communities that champion family preservation and physical, spiritual, and emotional thriving. We aim to keep families intact, prevent children from unnecessarily entering foster care during times of crisis, and build authentic, long-term relationships that empower families to thrive. What does it take to fra

cture a family? The answer is simple: a crisis such as homelessness, unemployment, or a parent being hospitalized, combined with a lack of friends or family who are able to provide the support the family needs right then. Children end up in the foster care system, and another family in Charlotte becomes a statistic. We are not okay with this. And we believe there is a better way. God created ALL of us with a need for community in order to thrive. If the problem is social isolation, the answer is community. Alongside Families mobilizes and equips local churches to open their families, their homes, their social networks, their resources, and their hearts to invite their isolated neighbors to life together within community. WHAT WE DO
- Mobilize the church to live out Christ’s love to isolated families in our community.
- Build relationships with families in need and provide connections to community resources and our social networks.
- Empower families to stay intact and gain stability and independence. HOW WE DO IT
- Connect families who are walking through hard times such as homelessness, medical or mental health challenges, or being overwhelmed as a parent, with compassionate volunteers in partner churches who are committed to family preservation.

- Temporarily host children whose parents need space and time to get back on their feet during a family crisis so that children don’t unnecessarily enter the foster care system. Parents maintain full custody of their children, and build friendships with the host family. Host Families are thoroughly screened and trained volunteers within local partnering churches who simply want to love their neighbors and keep families intact. Our goal is always family preservation. Hosting may be for a few days during a medical emergency, or for a few months when a parent needs more time to stabilize their situation.

- Provide supportive coaching and connection to resources for parents to help them reach their self-identified goals for family stability.

- Provide professional support and oversight so that volunteers can build long term, family-like relationships with isolated families that last far beyond the temporary hosting need. OUR HISTORY
Our team began partnering with local churches to serve isolated families in Charlotte in 2017 as part of a nationwide organization. In 2021 we became a locally headquartered nonprofit with the benefit of a local governing board and local management of funds to allow us to tailor our services to best meet the contextual needs of our local community. We continue to build upon and hone our gospel-centered model to provide new services and programs to help Charlotte families stabilize and thrive. OUR IMPACT
Our team of staff, volunteer, and partner churches has provided 160+ hostings to children whose parents were experiencing a crisis, provided 4,300+ nights of care, reunified 100% of children hosted with their parents, and built long-term, family-like relationships with isolated families who now have loving community to support them. COMMUNITY-FUELED
We believe that family preservation should be a priority of our community, and especially of the churches in our community. We live out love to our neighbors as a testimony to Christ's love. We are 100% privately funded by supporters, churches, volunteers, and local businesses who have a desire to champion gospel-centered family preservation and ensure that families in Charlotte stay together and thrive. Please consider joining us to fuel this ministry as a financial partner! https://www.alongsidefamilies.org/

Recently, we had a beautiful conversation with a pastor and the video team leader at Christ Community that left us deeply encouraged and challenged.

"The story is the star." - Pastor Michael Byrd, Christ Community Church

This particular conversation was centered on storytelling. We believe that if we tell stories well about what God has done, He will make sure they reach the hands, the hearts, and the people who need to see them.

What struck us most in the storytelling conversation was Pastor Byrd’s challenging reminder: “Every 'successful outcome' we celebrate at Alongside Families is standing beside another possible outcome that never happened.”

Without this ministry, another outcome may have happened. Can you imagine that outcome for a moment with us?

Dignity. It’s one of the core values we hold close at Alongside Families: We empower and do-with rather than compel and do-for.

For an isolated family in crisis, dignity can feel out of reach.

Parents living in poverty often find themselves navigating systems, policies, and waitlists that are confusing, overwhelming, and hard to access. In the middle of it all, struggling parents can begin to feel powerless, like their ability to make decisions for themselves and their children has been taken away.

When a family in crisis invites us into one of their most vulnerable moments, we are invited onto holy ground.

There are moments where God chips away at pride, fear, self-reliance, distraction, hurry, or comfort so that something more beautiful can emerge greater dependence on Him, deeper compassion, stronger unity, clearer purpose, and a ministry that reflects Jesus more fully.

And most of that transformation does not happen in giant moments.
It happens through small daily acts of obedience.

The next faithful phone call.
The extra conversation.
The prayer before the meeting.
The hard conversation handled with grace.
The unseen task done with excellence.
The decision to remain faithful when no one else sees it.

This mission is not built overnight.
It is shaped slowly through surrendered people willing to trust the hands of the Sculptor.

"Years ago, (Mary Kay) and her husband welcomed two young children - ages one and almost two - into their home while their mother, who was homeless and in crisis, worked to stabilize her life. Within two months, the mom had secured childcare vouchers, found a job, and moved into an apartment.

The kids came home.

'The little girl was almost two', Mary Kay recalls. 'She's nine now. Her mom and I still text pretty much every day.'"

At Alongside Families, we recognize the importance of working with our community partners. This kind of collaboration allows us to provide the best support possible for vulnerable families!

Our team is currently developing an online Partner Summit - an opportunity for organizations in our area to discuss ways we can serve the needs of their clients. If you work with families in crisis in the Greater Charlotte area and would like to participate, please reach out!

Essence, a single mom, was referred to us through a domestic violence shelter. She has no one to care for her 2 young children when she delivers her new baby - likely within the next couple of days. Without help, her children could unnecessarily enter the foster care system.

This might sound like a familiar story. In fact, it's the same situation faced by Maria, a single-mom in previous posts. This is the type of call we get on a regular basis - a single parent facing a temporary crisis with no support.

This is where the Body of Christ shines.

This is where YOU can step in to bring the love and hope of Jesus to a family in need.

We have incredible news to share: YOU DID IT.

Thanks to the generosity of donors in our community, we met the $10,000 Mother's Day matching challenge offered by Mercy Church!

The final total: $10,102. The match is fully unlocked, and every matched dollar is already going to work for families like Maria's.

As Mother's Day approaches, we know this holiday looks different for everyone. For some it's full of joy; for others it carries grief, longing, or complexity. Wherever you find yourself this Sunday, please know that you are seen, and you belong in this community.

Whatever your story, you have something powerful to offer: the ability to come alongside someone else.

That's what Alongside Families is all about. And that's exactly what you've done.

Thank you for being part of this. Whether you gave, shared, or simply cheered us on, it matters and we’re grateful.

With so much hope,

Emily Kemmann, Founder and CEO

P.S. The match is complete, but the need continues. If you'd like to make a gift, we're still gratefully accepting donations and would love for you to join this work.
