There was a lot to celebrate at our meeting this past Monday.

🎉We were proud to recognize Rotarian Jerry Depew, who received the prestigious Paul Harris Fellow recognition. Congratulations, Jerry, and thank you for your many years of dedication to Rotary and service to our community!

We also had the distinct pleasure of welcoming fellow Rotarian Lieutenant Andrew Gillespie with the Matthews Police Department. Lt. Gillespie shared a little about his journey in law enforcement, his leadership role with the department, and the important work happening behind the scenes in professional standards, accreditation, training, recruitment, and officer development.

We also enjoyed hearing about some of the unique experiences throughout his career and, of course, getting the hear all about his sweet pup, Ada Faye! 🐾

Thank you, Lt. Gillespie, for keeping us entertained and for your leadership and continue service to the Matthews community.

Today's meeting was extra special as we had the privilege of celebrating Matthews Police Officer of the Quarter, Officer Byron Cotto!

Officer Cotto consistently put Matthews residents first and is a wonderful example of what community service is all about. His commitment to serving and protecting our community, along with the care he shows the residents who call Matthews home, does not go unnoticed.

We were also very proud to recognize Sergeant Don Warren and Lieutenant Andrew Gillespie as Honorary Rotarians! Their service to Matthews and the relationships they have built with our club are wonderful examples of service above self in action.

📣Congratulations, Officer Cotto, Lieutenant Gillespie, and Sergeant Warren! We are grateful for all you do for Matthews and proud to celebrate you!

Last Monday, we enjoyed hearing from our fellow Rotarian, Tina Whitley Realty, NextHome Paramount, who shared a little about her incredible background in banking, community leadership, and real estate, along with a brief update on today’s local real estate market.

Tina has been a REALTOR® since 2015 and brings decades of experience and a deep knowledge of the Matthews community to her work.

We are grateful to Tina for sharing her time and expertise with us — and especially proud to have her as part of our Rotary Club of Matthews family!

As our nation celebrates its 250th anniversary this Independence Day, we remember those whose courage and sacrifice helped establish our country. We are equally grateful for the generations who have continued to serve and preserve the freedoms we enjoy today.

At Rotary, we believe one of the best ways to honor that legacy is through service to others. By serving our neighbors and working together to strengthen our community, we help carry those ideals forward.

We are grateful to be part of a Matthews community where neighbors come together and service continues to make a difference.

From all of us at the Rotary Club of Matthews, we wish you a safe and happy Fourth of July!

Yesterday, we celebrated an exciting new chapter as we held our 2026–2027 Officers Installation Ceremony.

We took time to recognize and thank our outgoing president, Bruce Kantor, for his outstanding leadership and service over the past year. Bruce's commitment to our club and our community has made a lasting impact, and we are incredibly grateful for all he has done.

We were also honored to welcome our new president, Fred Rogers, along with our 2026–2027 Board of Directors and officers. Thank you to our Assistant District Governor, Hayden Kramer, for leading the installation ceremony and reminding us that the magic of rotary is rooted in service and community.

Congratulations to our new leadership team! We look forward to another year of fellowship and service, and making a difference in the Matthews community.

We would also like to thank Atrium Health Union West Hospital for hosting our weekly meetings and for preparing a wonderful (and delicious) celebratory meal for our Officer's Installation.

This Memorial Day weekend, we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. It is a time to reflect on the courage and selflessness of those who gave their lives for the freedoms we enjoy every day.

We are grateful for the heroes who served and for the families who carry their legacy forward. We remember them today and always.

Wishing everyone a safe and meaningful Memorial Day.

This past Monday, we had a packed house as we gathered at the Matthews Police Department for a special meeting focused on celebration and fellowship.

👏🏼We recognized Animal Control Officer Heather Kirkman as Officer of the Quarter. Officer Kirkman was celebrated not only for her hard work and dedication to animal and public safety, but also for her willingness to step in wherever needed across the department. She is known for always being the first to volunteer to help, and her commitment to both the Matthews Police Department family and the Matthews community does not go unnoticed.

🎉We also proudly celebrated the induction of several new Rotary members. Chief Avens was inducted as a full member of the Rotary Club of Matthews, while Lt. Gillespie, Lt. McWhirter, and Sgt. Warren were inducted as associate members.

🙌🏼Thank you to the Matthews Police Department for hosting us and for the continued service and leadership you provide to our community each and every day.
