Community Update:

Earlier this morning at approximately 9:30 a.m., an individual drove through a section of our fence on Center Street and entered Riverside Cemetery while attempting to evade law enforcement.

Thanks to the quick thinking and actions of our grounds crew, the cemetery gates were secured, preventing the individual from exiting through the normal access points. Marshalltown Police officers were already on site, and a pursuit continued within the cemetery grounds. Unable to leave through the gates, the individual drove through a portion of the fence along 3rd Avenue before ultimately being apprehended by the Marshalltown Police Department.

We are grateful to report that no headstones, monuments, or gravesites were damaged during this incident. Our staff has already completed a temporary repair to the damaged fencing, and permanent repairs will be scheduled as soon as possible.

We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to our grounds staff for their quick response and professionalism, as well as to the Marshalltown Police Department for their efforts in bringing this situation to a safe resolution.

Thank you for your concern, support, and understanding as we address the damage and continue our daily operations. Riverside Cemetery remains open to visitors.

Volunteers Needed for Riverside Digitization Project

📁 Volunteers Needed – Help Us Digitize Riverside Cemetery’s Original Records 📁

Riverside Cemetery is beginning the first phase of our digitization project, starting with the letter A in our historic files. We are looking for volunteers who can help us scan and organize these original documents.

Volunteers will:

Use our Xerox scanner to digitize records

Create a digital file folder for each item

Add names to our Excel tracking form

Assist for one hour or more on weekdays

This is an important first step toward building a future system that will include digital maps, photos, and a public‑accessible website where families can look up information about their loved ones.

Starting Sept 28th, Gates will open at 7:00 a.m.
(Previously 6:30 a.m.)

This seasonal change helps us align with daylight hours and ensure safe access for visitors and staff.

Wildlife Feed Vending Machines Update 🦆🐢🦢
Our new wildlife feed vending machines are having a bit of a challenge this week. With all the rain we’ve received, the machines are absorbing moisture, which is affecting how they dispense feed.

Until they dry out and behave themselves again, please stop by the office — we will gladly give you a cup of feed so you can still enjoy visiting our ducks, geese, fish, turtles, and swans.

Thank you for your patience while we work through this rainy‑day hiccup. As with all good things, there are a few bumps along the way!

October 1st Decoration Removal Reminder
October 1st is approaching, and this is your reminder that **ALL decorations must be removed from markers by October 1st**.

This includes items on:
- Flat markers
- Upright monuments
- Mausoleum spaces
- Columbarium spaces

# # # **Important Notes**
- **Items left under the railing** at the Mausoleum or Columbarium will be removed and disposed of.

- **Items covering the entire interment lot** (such as large displays, full‑lot coverings, or decorations spread across the grass) **must also be removed**. These items interfere with mowing, trimming, leaf removal, and fall cleanup.

Any decorations **left after October 1st will be removed by Grounds Staff and disposed of**, so please make arrangements to remove items **before** the deadline.
Decorations may be **placed back out starting October 8th**.
We are truly sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, but this process happens every year so our Grounds Staff can complete fall cleanup safely and efficiently. Clearing decorations allows us to manage leaves, mow, trim, and prepare the cemetery for the winter season.
