Today, the Men of Rho Eta Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. proudly honor the life, legacy, and limitless impact of Honorable Brother Dr. George Washington Carver—a visionary scholar, artist, inventor, and humanitarian whose work forever changed our nation and the state of Iowa.
Hon. Bro. Dr. Carver’s journey is one of resilience and brilliance. While in Iowa, his determination was on full display when he walked 26 miles from Winterset to Indianola to gain acceptance to Simpson College, where his artistic talent first opened academic doors. An accomplished artist with a deep passion for painting and design, his creativity later carried into his scientific innovations.
At Iowa State, Hon. Bro. Dr. Carver made history as:
• The first Black student admitted
• The first Black graduate
• The first Black faculty member
His groundbreaking work in agriculture uplifted struggling farmers across the South, promoting crop rotation and sustainable farming while developing hundreds of practical uses for crops such as peanuts and sweet potatoes. Nationally recognized, he advised U.S. presidents, earned the NAACP Spingarn Medal, and devoted his life to service over profit.
Hon Bro. Dr. Carver was also an innovator in science and art, holding patents for agricultural and industrial processes and being credited with the development and patenting of pigments, including Egyptian Blue, blending chemistry with artistry in a way only he could.
Today, we celebrate a man who walked miles for an education, broke barriers with excellence, and used his God-given gifts to uplift humanity. May his legacy continue to inspire us to serve, innovate, and lead with purpose.
