Battle of Belleau Wood — June 13th Reflection

On June 13, 1918, the Marines continued their brutal fight in the woods of Belleau Wood during World War I. Facing deadly machine-gun fire, artillery, and fierce resistance, the Marines pushed forward with unmatched courage and determination.

It was during this battle that the Marines earned a legendary reputation for toughness and fighting spirit, forever connecting them with the nickname “Devil Dogs” (Teufel Hunden). The sacrifice and bravery shown at Belleau Wood became part of the warrior legacy of the United States Marine Corps.

Belleau Wood was more than a battle — it was a statement.
Marines don’t quit. Marines adapt, overcome, and accomplish the mission.

To those who fought, bled, and never returned:

Semper Fidelis. 🇺🇸
Their courage echoes forever.

👣 THESE ARE MORE THAN FOOTPRINTS… THEY ARE A LEGACY. 🇺🇸

Every Marine remembers the Yellow Footprints.

They represent the moment ordinary men and women took their first step toward earning the title United States Marine. They symbolize discipline, sacrifice, commitment, and a lifelong bond that never fades.

Today, that legacy continues through the Marine Corps League.

Whether you served 4 years or 40, active duty or reserve, the Marine Corps League provides an opportunity to stay connected, support fellow Marines and veterans, serve your community, and preserve the traditions we fought to uphold.

Once a Marine, Always a Marine.

Join the brotherhood. Continue the mission. Leave your legacy for the next generation.

***Special Announcement***

On the day of one of the most iconic Nicknames was given.

Our Dept of Az Protocol Officer Zeb Young share ls his family’s legacy and continues the Saga.

Henry C. Young, Corporal, USMC
8/6/1886-2/16/1956

Henry Young was born in 1886, in Aurora, New York. He first enlisted into the United States Marine Corps in December of 1908, at the age of 22. He served for a period at Annapolis Naval Academy. He also was part of the Cuba Occupation Army. While in his first enlistment, he ultimately qualified as an expert with his rifle. He also received Good Conduct Medal #3531. After discharge from the Marine Corps, Henry joined the US Army and was with a Cavalry unit out of Ohio. When the Great War began to heat up, Henry was discharged at the “Convenience of the Government” from the Army. He re-enlisted into the Marine Corps in 1917. He performed duties state-side until 1918, when he was deployed aboard the USS Von Stueben for France. While in France, he was promoted to Corporal and participated in the Muese-Argonne Offensive. He was discharged in 1919with his Good Conduct Medal bar.Henry went on to live back in New York, where he lived most of his life. There is documentation that in 1944, Henry was living in St, Petersburg, Florida where he was the Adjutant of his local Marine Corps League detachment. This detachment is likely to be the Maj. It is with great honor that Corporal Young’s legacy continue on. Special thank you and big barks to our Dept of Az Protocol Officer Zeb Young.

On June 1, 1918, the battle of Belleau Wood began.

The Marines who fought there, cemented a legacy for generations to come. This was the first large-scale battle for the Marines and one that would be seared into the collective memory of the United States Marine Corps. The battle was fierce and raged for more than three weeks, finally coming to an end on June 26, 1918.

The Germans said the Marines fought like devils, calling them "teufel hunden." From that day on, Marines would be forever known as Devil Dogs.

This painting, by artist Franc-Earle Schoonover, shows the Marines’ savage fight for infamous, French woods.
