Would you like to see a fenced, safe, and accessible public dog park as ONE of the uses for the former Coffin School property? We know that many residents already bring their pups there now for exercise.

The Recreation & Parks department has filed an expression of interest in the abandoned playground at Turner Road and Shepard Street Extension with the town's department of Community Development & Planning, which is holding information and listening sessions with residents to get their input. The Friends of the Marblehead Dog Park Inc. have sent a letter to the CD&P department advocating that the Coffin playground be considered for a dog park to supplement OR replace the Lime Street facility, which has been plagued by access issues since the parking lot was closed in April 2021. (We have also strongly expressed our desire that Marblehead's existing dog park remain open while the Coffin project and the Reynolds Field refurbishment project are on the table.)

The CD&P folks have posted a survey on the town's website, seeking input from Marblehead residents. It will be live through the end of March. If you are interested in seeing a dog park in that location, we urge you to visit the page and click on the re-use survey.

The Community Development and Planning Department has begun the process of studying alternative uses for the Coffin School. This will be an on-going effort to…

The Marblehead Recreation & Parks Department has announced public input sessions for the Reynolds Field (aka Green Street Playground) Refurbishment Project.

The Marblehead Dog Park at Hoods Lane and Lime Street is adjacent to the field/playground and this refurbishment project will, we hope, ultimately improve access, parking and the canine-human experience at the dog park as well. We encourage dog-park users to participate in these sessions!

Please be aware of the following input sessions announced by the Rec & Park Dept. for this month, starting tomorrow, September 5, at 8:30 a.m.

The Friends of the Marblehead Dog Park send our deepest condolences to the family of Jeannine Camarda, who passed away last Sunday.

There very probably would be no dog park in Marblehead without Jeannine and the citizens’ committee that she organized almost 20 years ago.

A passionate dog lover, Jeannine led efforts to raise money and awareness for a dog park. For several years she tirelessly worked with Chip Osborne, Linda Rice Collins, and other town officials. She spoke at town meeting and she searched for sites in a land-starved community with few “buffer zones” from residential neighborhoods. She had the eventual site surveyed, met and worked with abutters, helped in planning and supervising construction—and we’re sure that she did much, much more.

Thanks to this persistent effort, the dog park opened on the hill above Reynolds Playground in December 2009.

When, in 2018, the Friends of the Marblehead Dog Park became aware that the adjoining residential development project would radically change access and parking for the park, Jeannine joined the board of our three-year-old 501c3 organization. She helped us strengthen our working relationship with the Recreation & Parks Commission and contributed her energy and experience to our current efforts to keep the park open during this challenging time.

We are profoundly grateful for everything that Jeannine did for the dogs and dog owners of Marblehead.

Jeannine Marie Camarda, 72, of Marblehead, passed away peacefully on July 27, 2025, after a brief illness surrounded by her loving family. She was the loving wife to Ronald H. Crockett for 33 years. Born in Salem, she was the daughter of the late Frank Thomas and Lorraine Eva Cot
