The crisp fall air was a refreshing change this week. The grass in the Lower Garden has slowly been encroaching on our peastone pathway—time for a group project! There was also was lots of planting in the Birdbath, Fothergilla, and Woodland Gardens.

The MGC recently had the pleasure of touring the Marblehead garden of beloved former president and longtime member Carolyn Lynch.

Carolyn was a passionate and accomplished gardener and philanthropist who spent 39 years as a member of the Marblehead Garden Club. She did extensive research on plants that reflected the historic period of the Jeremiah Lee Mansion and shared her gardening knowledge through illustrated lectures about plants and her gardens in Marblehead and Ireland.

Her love of gardening and belief in the importance of beautiful community spaces extended beyond Marblehead. The Carolyn Lynch Garden on Boston’s Rose Kennedy Greenway features some of her favorite plants.

Thank you to longtime friend of the MGC, Larry Simpson—the respected plant educator and garden designer who cares for Carolyn’s Marblehead garden—for taking us through this remarkable space that reflects Carolyn’s hard work, eye for beauty, and love of gardening.

100 Years of Gardening, Stewardship, Friendship & Community

For 100 years, the Marblehead Garden Club has put its love of gardening to work throughout our town. From early projects—including planting on the grounds of the original Mary Alley Hospital and helping transform a former dumping ground into Gatchell Green—to winning a Sears and Roebuck Beautification Award in 1968, planting Marblehead's “triangles,” and spearheading a campaign to replace Abbot Hall trees lost to disease, MGC members have helped shape the landscape we know today. Today, that work continues with community bulb planting and our Hollyhock Renewal Campaign.
These are just a few of the stories we'll be sharing as we celebrate our centennial year.
