STEPPING UP FOR BRYCE

Hope Strengthens Foundation recently connected with the family of an inspiring 3-year-old boy named Bryce Mott, who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a form of childhood cancer.

Bryce's initial treatment plan consisted of 4 to 6 three-week chemotherapy cycles. However, following additional imaging and biopsy testing, medical teams discovered that the cancer had metastasized to the surface of the bones around the base of his spine. As a result, a more aggressive treatment plan, including chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery over the next 18 months, is now necessary.

We are rallying our community of supporters to help provide the tangible financial and emotional support Bryce and his family will need on the road ahead. As a starting point, we are targeting medical and care expenses that have already begun to accumulate. Longer-term, with your help, our goal is to cover the following ongoing care expenses:

💚 $300 per month for medical bills/copays

💚 $200 per month for medical travel expenses

💚 $100 per month for home care needs

Hope Strengthens Foundation (HSF) recently visited Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's Pediatric Resource Program to present a contribution in support of our ongoing partnership and discuss expanding our joint efforts for pediatric patients and their families.

Advisory Board members Maxwell Latif and Patrick Sweeney represented HSF, joining Dana-Farber’s Joe Chabot and Brianne Ryan to discuss our collaborative progress and address the critical financial burdens facing pediatric oncology families.

Our discussion focused on three primary areas of need:

Transportation: Easing the cost of fuel and transit for families traveling frequently to Boston for treatment.

Lodging: Helping families maintain stable housing and ensuring access to accommodations near the hospital during extended treatment stays.

Nutrition: Ensuring patients and families have reliable access to healthy meals throughout care.

Looking ahead, both teams explored ways to broaden our reach, streamline aid delivery, and scale our impact so no family has to choose between essential everyday needs and life-saving care for their child.

Hope Strengthens Foundation recently visited the incredible clinical social work team at Home Base to deliver a well-deserved ice cream treat! It was a small token of our gratitude for the lifesaving care, case management, and therapeutic support they provide to service members, veterans, and their families.

We were proud to be joined by HSF Advisory Board member Loukas Nakos alongside members of the Home Base leadership team. We also extend a heartfelt thank you to HSF Advisory Board member Jim Clancy, whose generous support makes our partnership with Home Base possible.

Hope in Action: Supporting Future Healthcare Heroes

Thanks to Loukas Nakos, his wife Christine, and their daughters Jaclyn, Hayley, and Rachel, many students at the UNH College of Health and Human Services continue to receive direct support to achieve their dreams of a healthcare career.

The Nakos Family Scholarship Fund by Hope Strengthens Foundation was established in 2021, driven by the Nakos family's generosity and deep connection to UNH. Loukas (‘83) and their daughters Jaclyn (‘15 and ‘16G) and Rachel (‘19) are proud Wildcat graduates. The fund prioritizes first-generation college students pursuing healthcare careers at the university.

“I truly believe UNH is the greatest school and Hope Strengthens Foundation is the best charity in the nation,” said Loukas. “Our family is honored to work with such wonderful institutions to assist the next generation of healthcare professionals.”

Over the coming months, we will proudly feature some of these outstanding scholarship recipients. First up is Sarah DeMelo.

Why did you choose UNH?

“I chose to enroll at UNH because of its strong academic reputation and its commitment to hands-on learning, specifically in nursing. The university’s focus on clinical excellence and evidence-based practice aligns with my goals as a nursing student. I was also drawn to the sense of community at UNH, as it felt like a home away from home when visiting.”

What are your goals?

“My ultimate goal is to continue my education post-graduation to become an Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, and I hope to get a specialization in oncology to be able to be a Pediatric Oncology Nurse Practitioner. I will be the first in my family to go to college and the first in my entire family on both sides to be in healthcare.”

What does this scholarship mean to you?

“I would like to sincerely thank you for investing in my education and future. As a first-generation nursing student, pursuing higher education is both an honor and a challenge, and your generosity helps make this journey possible. Your support not only eases the financial burden but also motivates me to work harder and continue striving toward my goal of becoming a compassionate and dedicated nurse. I am truly grateful for your belief in students like me.”

There are unique golf experiences, and then there is Sullivan County Golf and Country Club. When you visit, you immediately feel like you’ve stepped into a story—because you have.

In his latest book, A Course Called Home, Tom Coyne does a masterful job of bringing that story to life. Beyond being a brilliant author, Tom is an incredibly generous supporter of our mission at Hope Strengthens Foundation. Thanks to his kindness, we were able to offer an exclusive "stay & play" package on the Member for a Day platform this past winter.

A huge thank you to Colin Jones and Aaron Brogan, who placed the winning bid. Last week, we joined them in Liberty, NY, to experience the magic of Tom’s words firsthand. We were even joined for a few holes by Superintendent Shaun Smith. It’s hard to imagine anyone more passionate about their craft than Shaun.

If you love the game of golf, we highly recommend picking up a copy of Tom’s book and planning a visit to Sullivan County GC. Together, they offer a truly sublime experience.
