Stories don’t only live on the page. They can be woven, sculpted, folded, bound, and built by hand.

In Crafting Stories, young artists and writers will explore bookbinding, weaving, paper sculpture, clay modeling, and other handicrafts as they create worlds and tell stories that spring to life.

In Game Masters, students ages 12–15 will explore how storytelling, strategy, rules, choices, and challenges work together to create an engaging player experience. They’ll experiment with different games and then design, play-test, and refine original games of their own.

Game Masters begins 9/14 and meets Mondays from 4:30–6:30 PM at The Cornerstone Center in Washington Heights. As always, registration is Pay-What-You-Can!

Join Uptown Stories for the 9/11 Day of Service as we prepare for another year of inspiring young writers. Volunteers will help organize our classroom, pack donated supplies for students at Title I schools, and create encouraging letters and artwork for student authors.

The event will take place on Friday, 9/11, from 10 AM–1 PM at 178 Bennett Avenue.

What makes a story impossible to put down? 📖

In The Elements of Fiction, young writers will explore how characters, settings, dialogue, and plot work together to keep readers turning the page. Through quick writing challenges, creative experiments, and thoughtful peer feedback, students will strengthen their own writing while gaining a new appreciation for the stories they love.

Uptown Stories is a Publishing Coordinator!

We’re looking for someone who is highly organized, technologically savvy, detail-oriented, and excited to help bring our young writers’ work into the world. Each semester, Uptown Stories publishes seven professionally designed anthologies featuring student writing from every workshop.

The Publishing Coordinator guides these books from manuscript collection through editing, design, printing, and celebration, ensuring that each anthology reflects the quality, care, and creativity of the young authors behind it.

Reporting to the Program Director and working with the Publishing Assistant and program staff, this part-time, hybrid position combines editing, graphic design, communications, and administrative responsibilities.

Get ready to bead, design, and create! In this student led art workshop, Uptown Stories writers and Kandi Bracelet experts Ari and Alex will teach participants the basics of Kandi crafting. Each day will bring a new project, and by the end of the week, students will have a collection of colorful pieces to wear, trade, and share.

Supervised by Uptown Stories teaching artist Fred Kloster.
