We join our friends at DignityUSA in celebrating Marianne Duddy-Burke as she announces her forthcoming retirement after nearly 19 years as executive director.

Marianne is a great friend of Outreach and a longtime and courageous advocate for LGBTQ Catholics. At the 2023 Outreach conference, she reminded us: “LGBTQ Catholics should be seen by the larger church as vitally important partners in the work of justice.”

We are so grateful for Marianne’s years of leadership and prophetic witness.

Marianne Duddy-Burke, who has been a leader of DignityUSA for more than forty years and the organization’s Executive Director since 2007, announced today in a letter to the Dignity community that she will step down after a successor has been chosen, and will assist with the transition.

Duddy-Burke has held numerous key roles within the world’s oldest organization for LGBTQIA+ Catholics, which was founded in 1972. She was the first woman elected president of DignityUSA (1993-1997). Prior to that, she served as vice-president, a member of the Board of Directors, Director of the New England Region, President of Dignity Boston, and on the national Coordinating Team for the Committee for Women’s Concerns.

Dear DignityUSA Community,

I am writing to let you know that, after thoughtful and prayerful consideration, I have decided the time is right for me to step down from my role as Executive Director of DignityUSA in the coming months. The past few years have brought significant challenges and opportunities, a great deal of travel, and I am ready to make more space for time with my family, do more of the writing and speaking that I love, and take life a little more slowly. In addition, I believe that emerging priorities will be well served by the talents, vision, and capabilities of the rising generations of Dignity leadership. Serving this movement, this mission, and this community as your Executive Director has been a tremendous privilege, and I will forever be grateful for the trust placed in me over the years. I am proud of what we have accomplished and confident in our future.
