As the June 30 submission deadline approaches, we're looking back at one of the outstanding projects recognized in the 2025 AIA Wisconsin Design Awards program: the Royal Thai Pavilion Restoration at Olbrich Botanical Gardens, recipient of a Special Recognition Award for Historic Preservation.

This project exemplifies what makes the AIA Wisconsin Design Awards Program unique. Recognizing adaptive reuse, historic preservation, sustainably designed, or community impact-centered projects in addition to new construction, this program celebrates the full breadth of architectural excellence across Wisconsin. Great design takes many forms, and we are proud to recognize projects of all sizes, scales, and typologies that make a meaningful contribution to the built environment.

A special thank you to Stephen Mar-Pohl, AIA, and Stacey Z. Keller, AIA, of InSite Consulting Architects for taking the time to share the story behind this remarkable project. Their insights into the restoration process and the importance of preserving this unique cultural landmark help demonstrate the lasting impact architects' work can have on our communities.

Join AIA Northeast WI for a tour of Kafka Granite headquarters in Mosinee, WI

This tour provides an inside look at Kafka Granite’s unique operations, from custom thin stone veneer fabrication to innovative quarry and crushing plant processes that create a diverse range of materials. Participants will learn about the sustainability of granite and stone products manufacturing and use in buildings, and how natural stone products are transformed from raw materials into beautiful, durable solutions for buildings. Through firsthand access to active production facilities, participants will gain a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship, customization, and environmental responsibility that go along with stone manufacturing.
