SpY is a globally recognized Madrid-based urban and public artist. Rising to prominence as a pioneering graffiti artist in the 1980s, he is best known for creating massive, conceptual, and often interactive public installations that disrupt everyday city routines. His work transforms the urban environment into a playground of ironical and playful interventions.

Key defining features of his work include:

Conceptual Subversion: He often recontextualizes familiar urban objects—like traffic signs, fences, and lights—to challenge societal rules, surveillance, and human relationships.

Massive Scale: His recent portfolio includes colossal kinetic sculptures and light installations. Notable works include glowing monuments at the Noor Riyadh Festival in Saudi Arabia and the ORB installation at the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt.

This is Loop is an award-winning public art studio and collaborative artistic partnership between Harriet Lumby and Alan Hayes, based in Somerset, UK. They are renowned for creating large-scale, immersive, and experiential audio-visual sculptures and architectural installations that blend science, technology, and art. Their work frequently tours internationally, often featured at light festivals, science events, and large gatherings.

Key highlights of their practice include:

Immersive Illumination & Illusion: Their sculptures heavily feature mirrors, reflections, and thousands of addressable LEDs to create hypnotic, mirrored geometric structures (such as tunnels or carousels) that you can walk inside.

Science Integration: They often collaborate with scientific institutions to interpret complex data into public art. For example, their project Geist was inspired by the hunt for the elusive neutrino particle, taking actual data from particle detectors and mapping it into the artwork's audio and light sequences.

Choi+Shine Architects is an internationally awarded art and architecture design studio co-founded by Jin Choi and Thomas Shine. Both principals hold Master of Architecture degrees from Yale University and are known for blending infrastructure, architecture, and large-scale, community-driven public art across the globe.

The studio is highly regarded for a few distinct concepts:

Land of Giants: Their most iconic conceptual project proposed transforming mundane electrical transmission towers into giant, human-shaped figures across the Icelandic landscape.

Community-Crafted Installations: Choi and Shine frequently design monumental, elaborate lace and fiber-art installations, such as giant sea urchins and the 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiac, which are meticulously crocheted by hundreds of local volunteers.

Architecture & Experimental Design: Alongside large-scale public art, they design commercial, residential, and infrastructural projects, as well as patented lighting designs and temporary pavilions.

JJill Anholt is a prominent Vancouver-based visual artist and the principal of Jill Anholt Studio. Since 1998, she has specialized in site-specific, large-scale public art, creating award-winning interactive light installations, sculptures, and integrated architectural works across North America. Her work sits at the intersection of architecture, sculpture, and the human body. She is highly regarded for her ability to weave environmental sustainability and the hidden, structural "memories" of a site into dynamic, experiential installations. Anholt holds a master's degree in architecture from The University of British Columbia and has training in sculpture, drawing, and physical therapy. She also teaches at Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver. She has received numerous national and international recognitions, including a CODAawards Merit award for her Aperture glazing installation in Spokane, Washington.

Her award-winning projects span the continent, including Sky Prairie (a kinetic sculpture at Kansas City International Airport), Us:All (an illuminated glass facade at Oregon State University), and Sea Change (an interactive, water-themed light installation in North Vancouver).

🎨 Meet the artists being considered to create the LakeWay’s first public art installation!

After reviewing 79 submissions from artists around the world, the LakeWay Public Art Ad Hoc Selection Committee recommended four finalists to be considered for the first public art installation along the LakeWay: Jill Anholt, Choi + Shine, SpY, and This is Loop.

Come meet the artists, explore their work, and hear their vision for this once-in-a-generation waterfront project along Lake Monona.
