Honoring the Life and Legacy of Dr. Barbara L. Nichols
There are moments that are difficult to put into words. The Wisconsin Center for Nursing had one of those moments at our Nursing Workforce Summit as the Wisconsin Nurses Honor Guard came to honor Barbara Nichols.
In a deeply moving tribute, the Wisconsin Nurses Honor Guard called Barbara to duty for the last time — and forever.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, a white rose was presented to WCN Advisory Board Member Tim Size, a friend of Barbara’s, symbolizing Barbara’s final call to duty and the lasting impact she leaves on those who knew and loved her.
It was a beautiful and emotional tribute to a remarkable nurse, leader, mentor and friend.
Barbara’s legacy also continues through the Barbara Nichols Lifetime Achievement Award, created to honor nurses who exemplify the leadership, dedication and commitment that Barbara demonstrated throughout her life.
We are honored to share photos of Thomas E. Veeser, RN, MS, one of the inaugural recipients of the Barbara Nichols Lifetime Achievement Award in 2025, and Lisa Hansen, PhD, RN, CNM, FACNM, FAAN, this year’s recipient.
Two recipients. One meaningful legacy.
Thank you to the Wisconsin Nurses Honor Guard for helping us honor Barbara in such a powerful and unforgettable way.
Barbara, you have been called to duty for the last time. Your service may be complete, but your legacy lives on.
