One high school choir will be selected to perform with the Wisconsin Chamber Choir at our Here Comes the Sun concert on Saturday, May 8, 2027, at First Unitarian Society in Madison. The selected choir's music program will receive a $500 honorarium.
The application is short. Directors send their name, school, email, and a video or audio link of one song from the most recent school year.
Applications are due November 13, 2026, and we'll announce the selected choir in late November or early December.

If you sing in a high school choir or know a director who would be a good fit, please pass this along.

Our December concert pairs J.S. Bach with a composer a lot of people haven't heard of yet: Margaret Bonds.

Bonds was born in Chicago in 1913 and studied composition with Florence Price. In 1933 she became the first Black soloist to perform with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. She later became a close friend and collaborator of the poet Langston Hughes.

The Ballad of the Brown King came out of that friendship. Hughes wrote the text, which tells the Christmas story through Balthazar, the African king among the three Magi. Bonds set it in nine movements that draw on spirituals, jazz, blues and calypso. An expanded version aired nationally on CBS in December 1960.

We'll sing it with the Sinfonia Sacra Chamber Orchestra on December 12 in Middleton and December 13 in Janesville, along with holiday music by Bach.

Had you heard of Margaret Bonds before? We'd love to know.
