Focused Interruption Evidence-based intervention and prevention for communities most impacted by gun violence.

Since 2016, Focused Interruption has helped over 500 victims of gun violence in the Madison area by providing support, guidance, and assistance to the victims and their families. By refocusing these individuals, we empower them to see their value in our community. With our City of Madison experiencing an 88% increase in shootings over this past year, Focused Interruption's mission to end gun violence is more vital than ever. We have proven solutions for creating safer communities and are committed to making this a reality for Madison.

We’re proud to be part of the 2026 Partners in Giving Campaign, Wisconsin’s workplace giving program, running now through December 1.

Through Partners in Giving, eligible employees and retirees can designate a gift to Focused Interruption and invest directly in this work: outreach, mentorship, trauma-informed care, and safer neighborhoods across Madison and Dane County. Even a small gift adds up to real, year-round support.

Spooky season is in full swing in our neighborhoods!

This month, our team brought Halloween fun to two of our communities, Harmony and Meadowlands, for an afternoon made for families.

Kids decorated masks and candy bags, everyone shared pizza, and neighbors got the chance to connect, laugh, and spend time together. It was so good to see familiar faces and meet new ones. These gatherings might look simple, but they’re how neighbors become friends, how families learn about the support that’s here for them, and how we keep showing up in the places we serve, month after month.

And we’re not done yet. We’re bringing the celebration to Park Cedar next, one of our newer communities, and we can’t wait to spend the evening with even more families.

More togetherness. More community. That’s the whole idea.

Prevention starts where young people already are. 🧡

Every week, our Leaders of Tomorrow team assists with programming for teens at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dane County teen after-school program. The Club is open to teens ages 12 to 18, free, daily until 8 PM, with dinner, supportive adults, and activities in sports, leadership, education, and the arts. We join weekly, and the Club is there every day, so teens have a steady place to land.

Bus transportation helps teens in the neighborhoods we serve get there and get home safely. And when we are out in the community, our team makes a point of telling parents of teens about the program, so families know it exists and that it is free.

Community violence intervention, the public health approach at the heart of everything we do, starts with early support and real relationships. This is prevention in action.

We're hiring! 🧡

We're growing our team with two part-time roles for people who want to do meaningful work right here in Madison.

Leader of Tomorrow Facilitator & Youth Mentor (from $27/hour)
Lead school-based leadership and mentorship groups for middle and high school students. Be the steady, trusted adult who helps students build confidence, communication, and conflict-resolution skills before problems become crises. Typically 9 AM to 3 PM, with occasional evening and weekend hours.

Community Safety Worker ($28/hour)
Be a visible, trusted presence in the neighborhoods we serve. Build everyday relationships, support neighbors through minor conflicts, and connect people to the services they need. Evenings and weekends as needed. Valid driver's license required.

Both roles include paid training and paid time off. We especially encourage people with strong ties to the communities we serve to apply.

This is community violence intervention, the public health approach at the heart of everything we do, and it starts with showing up for people. This is prevention in action.

Anthony was in Washington, D.C. this week for The Trace Live: Safer Together, a national gathering of community violence intervention (CVI) leaders, researchers, and journalists.

Focused Interruption tabled at the Northside Festival at Mallard Stadium on September 12, one of our favorite annual community events.

We connected with more than 70 neighbors across every age group, from babies to seniors, sharing information about our programs and answering questions about our agency. On September 12, we stood with the Black Opioid Coalition at Penn Park for an Overdose Awareness Gathering.

Miss Hunt and Miss Adams led the gathering with urgency and compassion, reminding everyone that today's opioid supply, often laced with fentanyl, is not the drug supply of the past. The message was clear: stigma kills, compassion saves, and awareness is prevention.
