Focused Interruption

Focused Interruption Evidence-based intervention and prevention for communities most impacted by gun violence.

Since 2016, Focused Interruption has helped over 500 victims of gun violence in the Madison area by providing support, guidance, and assistance to the victims and their families. By refocusing these individuals, we empower them to see their value in our community. With our City of Madison experiencing an 88% increase in shootings over this past year, Focused Interruption's mission to end gun viole

nce is more vital than ever. We have proven solutions for creating safer communities and are committed to making this a reality for Madison.

Ten years. One unforgettable night.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at Atwood Music Hall to celebrate a decade of Focused Interruption. The room was full, the energy was electric, and the love for this community was everywhere you looked.

We heard from powerful voices, honored the people who do this work every day, celebrated local artists and performers, and stood together in support of a safer, more connected Madison.

To every guest, sponsor, performer, volunteer, and supporter: Thank You. You showed up, and you reminded us what is possible when a community comes together.

We have a ton more photos for you to check out with links on focusedinterruption.org/gala

This is just the beginning. Here is to the next ten years!

Community is the cure.

A message from our founder and CEO, Anthony Cooper Sr.

Ten years of showing up for Dane County. On August 27, we celebrated that with all of you in the room, and Anthony wanted to say thank you himself.

What a night. Thank you, from all of us.

Last night we gathered at Atwood Music Hall to celebrate ten years of Focused Interruption, and our hearts are full. Thank you to everyone who showed up, gave, bid, and stood with this community. You made it unforgettable.

A few moments we have to share:

Our own team, up on that stage. These are the people who show up in Madison’s neighborhoods every single day, doing the work of violence intervention, healing, and connection. Seeing them recognized in a room full of support meant everything.

LashayTheArtist painted an original piece live during the evening, Safety, Unity, Community, Opportunity, the very values at the heart of this work, and then generously donated it back to Focused Interruption. We could not have asked for a more perfect reminder of what we build together.

And a heartfelt thank you to Martin Nelson and Mary Ann Phalen, who won the powerful sculpture crafted from decommissioned fi****ms in our silent auction, and then donated it back to live in our office. Every day, it will remind us of exactly what we are working toward.

This is what community looks like. This is what being known looks like. This is the cure.

With gratitude,
Focused Interruption

Tonight, this becomes someone’s.

The painting reflects Lashay’s own childhood in Chicago’s Robert Taylor Homes, where safe places to play and simply be a child were often limited. Through layered color and movement, a young girl imagines an alternate world, steady and present amid the chaos. It’s a reminder that creativity can become refuge, possibility, and a way to envision something better.

That’s not just art. That’s the whole reason we do this work.

Thank you, UnityPoint Health – Meriter, for your generous support of our Inaugural Gala.

For more than a century, Meriter has been part of the fabric of this community, working to improve the health of the people and neighborhoods of Madison and Dane County. We treat violence as a public health issue, and partners who share that commitment to community wellbeing make this work possible.

We're honored to have Meriter standing with us as we celebrate ten years.

Thank you, Beb's Beauty Supply, for your generous support of our Inaugural Gala.

Beb's is one of Madison's only Black-owned beauty supply stores, and it was born from love. Owner Dennis Franklin opened it in honor of his late mother, Beverly, carrying forward her lesson to treat people fairly. That's why Beb's keeps its prices affordable and its doors welcoming, a place where this community can see itself and be seen.

That spirit, community, dignity, and showing up for one another, is exactly what we're celebrating on August 27. We're honored to have Beb's standing with us.

Join us Thursday. Community is the cure.

Thank you, Inspire Barber College, for your generous support of our Inaugural Gala.

Right here in Madison, Inspire Barber College is opening doors, training the next generation of barbers and helping people build careers, confidence, and a path forward. That's the kind of opportunity that strengthens a whole community, and it's exactly the spirit we're celebrating.

We're honored to have you standing with us.
