Today, we recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day and honor the Indigenous peoples and Tribal Nations who have shaped, cared for, and continue to call Wisconsin home.

Wisconsin is home to 11 federally recognized Tribal Nations, each with its own history, culture, and sovereign government. Today is an opportunity to recognize their continued presence, resilience, and contributions across our state.

At Tenant Resource Center, we also recognize that conversations about housing, land, displacement, and stability are deeply connected to history. As we continue working toward housing justice in Dane County, we believe that history matters.

Tenant Resource Center will be closed Monday, October 12, in observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day. We will resume normal services on Tuesday, October 13.

Wisconsin law requires landlords to keep rental units capable of reaching at least 67°F in every living area throughout the year. A heater that does not work, a unit that remains cold with the heat running, or doors and windows that do not seal may indicate a heating problem.

Notify your landlord in writing and keep records of temperatures, messages, and maintenance requests. If the issue is not addressed within a reasonable amount of time, contact your local building inspection office.

One day on the green. An impact that reaches far beyond it!

Tee Off for TRC brought our community together in support of renter education, eviction prevention, housing mediation, and greater housing stability throughout Dane County.

Every golfer, sponsor, volunteer, and supporter who showed up helped strengthen the work behind our vision of Housing Justice for All.

Thank you for standing with renters and helping make this day possible. ⛳

Rental applications can come with fees, but where does that money actually go?

In Wisconsin, money submitted with a rental application is often considered earnest money. Landlords must follow rules governing how long they can hold it, what costs they may deduct, and when the remaining money must be returned.

A landlord may charge the actual cost of a credit report, up to $25 per applicant. They must notify you about the charge and provide you with a copy of the report.

If your application is denied or you withdraw it before it is accepted, your earnest money generally must be returned by the end of the next business day, minus an allowed credit-check cost.

Keep your application, receipts, notices, and other communication in writing.

A notice from your landlord can feel overwhelming, but ignoring it could limit your options.

If you receive an eviction notice, lease violation, nonrenewal, rent change, or another written notice:

• Keep the original and make a copy
• Document when and how you received it
• Read the entire notice carefully
• Don’t sign anything you don’t understand
• Contact Tenant Resource Center as soon as possible

Some notices include important deadlines. The sooner you ask questions, the more time you may have to understand your options.
