MADISON - William J. “Bill” Scherer Jr., age 92, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 12, 2026. Bill was born on July 29, 1934, to William J. and Helen R. (Karnes) Scherer. He was a lifelong resident of Madison.

A Message from the President of the Madison Association of the Deaf

Hello MAD Members and Community!

We are excited to share a message from our new MAD President, Christopher Rawlings.

Christopher shares his vision for MAD—building a stronger community focused on accessibility, safety, respect, equality, empowerment, communication, and growing together.

Please read his message below. 👇

Hello MAD Members and Community,

I would like to let you all know that I have now become President of the Madison Association of the Deaf (MAD). I am excited and grateful for the opportunity to serve our community, support our members, and help guide MAD forward together.

First, I want to apologize for the lack of email communication over the past year. Moving forward, I will do my best to respond to emails as soon as possible. If I accidentally overlook an email or you have not received a response from me, please feel free to email me again. I will be happy to see what I and the MAD team can do to help.

One of my biggest goals is for the Madison Association of the Deaf to be a place where everyone feels safe, respected, welcomed, and comfortable being part of our community. I also want us to continue improving accessibility for everyone so that more people can participate, communicate, connect, and feel included in MAD. Accessibility and inclusion will be important parts of how we move forward.

I also want MAD to continue growing stronger through equality and teamwork. I do not want MAD to feel like a power system where one person is above everyone else. We each have different roles and responsibilities, but everyone's voice and contribution matter. I want us to listen to each other, support each other, and treat each other with respect.

We also believe in empowering everyone. If you have an idea, want to take on a responsibility, help with an event, start something new, or become more involved with MAD, please ask! We are here to support and guide you—not hold you back. We want to give people opportunities to learn, contribute, and grow. When our members grow, MAD grows too.

MAD is also a membership organization. If you are interested in becoming a member or renewing your membership, please let us know! We would be happy to help guide you through the membership process and answer any questions.

As we move forward, I also hope to improve our social media and communication, create more events and opportunities for our community to connect, improve accessibility, and possibly work toward developing or improving a MAD website. There is a lot we can do, and I am excited to see MAD continue to grow.

As President, I am excited to help guide our team and serve our community, but we will build the future of MAD together.

Thank you for trusting me with this opportunity. I look forward to seeing what we can accomplish and where MAD goes next!

We’re excited to share that the Wisconsin interpreters are hosting their Friendsgiving dinner again on Saturday, November 14, at 5 p.m. The homemade food is great, and it’s just $10. Come celebrate with us as we keep building friendships between interpreters and the deaf community.

Come hang out at our Halloween party! John Dyreson is hosting at 7:30 PM. Bring a dessert snack to share and make sure to wear a costume. Feel free to bring your carved pumpkins to show off at the clubhouse. It'll be a blast, see you all there!

We’re hosting a Packers watch party at the clubhouse on Sunday, September 20. We’ll be serving Sloppy Joes, so please bring a side to share. Admission is free for members and $5 for non-members. Doors open an hour before kickoff. Go Packers!

Bob Enders is hosting a Texas hold 'em tournament for the public on Saturday, September 26. The tournament will begin at 6 pm. The bar will open at 4 pm. Hearing people are welcome to play with us!

A message from Travis Olson, known as Twig:

"Hey! I am not sure if you have heard what happened to Twig, son of Ōl, in the past 8 months. I have had a series of unfortunate events. My appendix exploded 6 months ago; I did not go to the ER for 4 days and got a leak infection that spread through my tummy. I had emergency surgery, but I made it through. Then, on Aug 19th, I was in a deadly bike accident and got myself hurt badly; they had to airlift me to the hospital and open me up twice to stop me from bleeding out. That is going to put me out of work for months. Due to a long road of recovery, I do not have insurance or any luck left, but I have a life to live! I rented the Madison Association of the Deaf building on W***y St. in Madison to host a Halloween party! I am doing this to give back to the communities that have pulled me through my life, to fund my recovery, and mainly to support my lady, Kayla Every, and her kid so they can have a stable and good life, as well as to pay my bills. I have so many amazingly talented friends and people out there I met on the road who are giving me all the support and donations that I am going to give back to YOU GUYS. There will be raffles and booth vendors; please DM for more info. I am also doing food ticket funds that will go to the Madison Association of the Deaf building, which needs remodeling and upgrades for a bigger and brighter future for the community. This will be very mainstreamed for both the deaf and hearing worlds I thrive in. Open to the public! Family-friendly, trick-or-treating in the neighborhood, games, prizes, best dressed prizes, s'mores, and a bonfire. Loud music! Live bar! Socialize, be inspired, and have a good time. There will be a product toss after the raffle so everybody wins! Just gotta catch them all! Share away. Thank you, and I love you guys. Twig Olson."
