Please join us for the first Members Annual Yearly Big Event (M.A.Y.B.E) on Saturday, October 10th from 5-8pm!

This is a “can’t miss” event if you are a member of MaybeItsFate. We’re throwing a big party to celebrate all the amazing and incredible members in our community, all that we have accomplished in our first two years as a community, and it’s going to be a great time!

“The Floods and the Fringes” & “Background Vocals”

MaybeItsFate is thrilled to welcome German-based artist Jeremy Kamal and his art in a new exhibition opening.

Jeremy Kamal’s ongoing world-building project Mojo imagines a speculative future in which sound systems evolve into sentient landscapes. Centering Black values, rituals, and practices, the project treats culture not as something separate from the environment, but as an ecological force capable of producing its own forms of landscape. Through Mojo, Kamal explores how alternative cultural practices might offer new ways of thinking about technology, nature, and the construction landscape.

“The Floods & the Fringes” combines a world-building scrapbook with a two-channel video installation, exploring Jeremy Kamal’s speculative universe Mojo, a future where Black cultural practice, technology, and nature co-evolve into speculative ecosystems.

“Background Vocals,” curated by local artist and MIF member Jes Allen, takes its name from the singers who prop up a soloist’s fame while remaining in obscurity, a role women of color have long been asked to play in service of causes that credit others; this exhibition brings those voices to the front and gives them the chance to shape their own narrative.

“Background Vocals” features works by Ada Asenjo, Debra Harley, Donyalle Jackson, Erica Chenise Wilcox, Jes Allen, Nahla Joy, Sandra Charles, Shauntrice Black, Tomisha Lovely-Allen, Ton’nea Green, Suyun Son, and Uhma Janus.

Sunday, August 30, Maybe It’s Fate Presents Screening of Lexi Bass’s Award-Winning Experimental Science Fiction Film Meander (2024)

Maybe It’s Fate is pleased to present a screening of filmmaker Lexi Bass’s experimental science fiction film Meander (2024) on Sunday, August 30 at 6:00 PM, followed by a post-screening Q&A with Lexi Bass, filmmaker and Lecturer in Animation and Digital Art at the University of Kentucky, moderated by Lyall Bush, Chair of Film at Kentucky College of Art and Design.

Blending speculative fiction, mythology, and personal essay, Meander explores the uncertain boundaries between humanity, technology, reproduction, and ancestry. Set in a near-future world shaped by artificial intelligence, the film follows Meander, a woman trapped in an underworld where her only chance of escape is to offer her reproductive potential to an experimental facility. Interwoven with this dystopian narrative is Bass’s personal meditation on pregnancy, motherhood, aging, and the loss of her own mother at the threshold of forty.

Drawing from ancient Greek mythology and contemporary anxieties surrounding artificial intelligence, Meander asks what it means to create life, preserve connection, and imagine the future of humanity in a rapidly changing technological landscape.

Many years ago, while still in art school, Gary Slaughter had a realization that would shape the rest of his creative life: if he took a job in art, art would become the job, and he’d spend his days painting someone else’s ideas instead of his own. So he did the opposite. He worked a regular job so that art could stay exactly what he loved it to be: a space for experimentation, curiosity, and fun, free from anyone else’s deadlines or expectations.

He likes to introduce himself as Louisville’s most UNcredible artist, cheerfully pointing out that he has no previous shows, exhibitions, or awards to his name. It’s a title he wears with a wink, and one that belies the depth of skill and observation packed into his work.

More than 25 years ago, what Slaughter describes as Divine Intervention led him to a small studio tucked into Butchertown, where he lived and painted for over a decade. It was there, while working on a pig painting he titled The Beauty IN THE Beast, that something shifted in him: he stopped eating meat. He suspects it wasn’t entirely coincidence that Armour and Fisher, two working meatpacking plants, were operating in the neighborhood at the time. Between the paint on his brush and the smoke on the air, Butchertown had a way of asking questions a person couldn’t ignore, and Slaughter’s answer was to become a vegetarian.

That same instinct for looking closely at the ordinary (which are often animals — maybe you saw Gary’s fish paintings hanging at MIF in a recent group show) and finding something tender, strange, or sacred inside it still runs through his work today.
