House 571 is home 🤲

Last week we celebrated House Blessing Day with Audrea and her two little ones in Belize City! And yes, there was dancing in the new living room 🙌

Until now, Audrea and her kids shared one bedroom in a house with seven family members, under a roof that leaked every heavy rain. Now they have a safe, stable home of their own where they can grow, rest, and build a future together.

This home was funded by Luke Chase marathon fundraiser this spring. Every mile he ran and every dollar you gave helped make this day happen. And this is just house 1 of 2 coming from those funds!

The build was a true community effort. Hand in Hand staff worked side by side with local Belizean volunteers, including members of a local car club who showed up simply because they wanted to do some good and lend a hand.

Happy 45th Independence Day, Belize! 🇧🇿

This weekend Tandee Ogburn and Allison Monske from our Louisville office met up with Abel and Maggie Vargas, who flew in from our Belize office, for the Embassy of Belize September Celebrations in Washington DC. The event brings together Belizeans living across the US to celebrate home, and this year marked 45 years of independence.

The team set up a Hand in Hand table and got to spend time with Ambassador Nestor Mendez, Belize’s ambassador to the United States. It was a great chance to share how Belizeans abroad can give back to their home country, and to connect with so many people who care about Belize as much as we do.

Together with local families and thousands of volunteers, we’ve built more than 560 homes in Belize, and every single one started with people coming together 🙌

Saturday was our first year as a site for UofL’s SOUL Day of Service, and we could not have asked for a better group. Thank you Engage Lead Serve Board

Hundreds of UofL students fanned out across 23 sites in Louisville that morning. Eleven of them spent theirs with us.

In about two hours they packed 86 sack lunches that will go out to unhoused neighbors in west Louisville. Then they signed our wall of fame in the workshop, which means their names are up there with every group that has come through this building.

Two hours is not a long time. Eighty six lunches says otherwise.
