Woodland Library patio extension breaks ground!

Ground has officially broken on the long-awaited Woodland Library terrace and native habitat project, according to a press release from the Los Altos Library Endowment (LALE).

The $500,000 project, a cooperative effort between the City of Los Altos, the Santa Clara County Library District, GreenTown Los Altos (LAMVCF) and Los Altos Library Endowment, will convert an area adjacent to the Woodland Branch Library into a vibrant terrace.

“The Los Altos Library Endowment invests in improving the library’s physical spaces to create welcoming places for the community to learn, gather, and connect,” stated Suresh Shanmugham, LALE treasurer, in the release. “Through thoughtful, long-term capital investments, we are strengthening our libraries to meet the evolving needs of future generations.”

Vibrant Outdoor Extension of Woodland Library Branch Breaks Ground | Los Altos Library Endowment partners with GreenTown Los Altos and the City of Los Altos on Woodland Library Terrace and Native Habitat.

The Los Altos Library Endowment, in partnership with GreenTown Los Altos and the City of Los Altos, has broken ground on the highly anticipated Woodland Library Terrace and Native Habitat. The project aims to expand and enhance the library experience by creating a vibrant outdoor extension of the Woodland Branch.

“The Woodland Library Terrace and Native Habitat will transform a long-unused area behind the library into a welcoming, dynamic space for the community,” said Freddie Park Wheeler, President of the Los Altos Library Endowment. “As Andrew Carnegie once said, ‘A library outranks any other one thing a community can do to benefit its people.’ Our Board lives this belief every day as we invest in spaces that serve generations to come.”

Designed for families, students, and neighbors of all ages, the new Terrace will offer inviting places to read, study, play, and gather—helping to ease crowding inside the library while expanding opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.

Project Highlights Include:

• Seating areas with tables and umbrellas
• Open play surfaces for games and chalk
activities
• Flexible pathways suitable for small programs, food trucks, and community

Adjacent to the Terrace, GreenTown Los Altos will develop a native habitat and educational space featuring hands-on learning opportunities focused on native plants, pollinators, and environmental stewardship.

Together, these improvements will create a shared community destination that supports learning, play, and connection beyond the library walls.

Twenty Five Years Strong And Growing!

Thank you to our ever enthusiastic community for popping up with at the downtown Los Altos annual farmers market kickoff!

We hosted the enthusiasm of the kickoff with some of our favorite friends .us and treated market goers to a BLOOM BAR by Turbow Farms, where families picked their own stems and bundles to take home and KIDS FASHION & TOY DESIGN station by DesignX, where young minds unleashed their creativity one station at a time.

We cannot wait to see the next twenty five years unfold for our local Los Altos and Woodland Libraries as the Los Altos Library Endowment is dedicated to strengthening the long-term infrastructure of our local libraries, our mission is to fund transformative, enduring capital improvements that elevate the library experience for our community.
