Sierra Club Basic Backpacking Course - SF Peninsula

Sierra Club Basic Backpacking Course - SF Peninsula Annual Basic Backpacking Class on the SF Peninsula, sponsored by the Sierra Club Cost for the 2014 class is $95 plus trip expenses.

Each spring, the Loma Prieta Chapter offers a Basic Backpacking Course, taught by volunteer instructors. The course includes 8 two-hour evening sessions (7:00-9:00), plus 3 weekend backpack field trips. The evening sessions cover topics ranging including buying a backpack, wilderness safety, minimum-impact hiking and camping, map & compass, to dealing with backcountry hazards and emergencies. Thre

e weekend overnight outings give participants a chance to try out their new skills under the watchful eyes of the instructors, plus receive instruction in such field skills as operation of backpack stoves, bear-bagging, and use of map and compass.

The 2014 class is now taking signups! There will be 8 Wednesday evening classes, April 16th through June 4th, 7:00 to 9:00 PM in Los Altos. Trips are May 3-4, May 17-18, and May 30-Jun 1 (Fri-Sun).
