LINDEN EVENT REMINDER!!!!

The LINDEN MILLS HISTORICAL SOCIETY will be participating in Ladies Night Out in downtown Linden, Saturday, November 7th. , 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. The theme of this event is "Ugly Christmas Sweaters".

The Historical Society will be located in the Masonic Lodge where we will have a table displaying our books and T-shirts for sale, as well as two gift baskets (donated by Barbara Kincaid) to be raffled off.. Stop by and say hi!!!!

The Linden Mills Historical Society will be at the Linden Ladies Night Out event on Nov. 7th. Huge thank you to the Executive Director of Back to The Bricks, AMBER TAYLOR, who spoke at our Oct meeting, last week. Great power point presentation and program!!!! Our members really enjoyed it!! That's our President, Pete Maas, with Amber. :-) Amber has been with Back to The Bricks since 2020.

Travel about 17 miles south of Flint and you will come to Linden, Michigan. Actually, back in the 1800's you would have first come to North Linden, Linden itself was 3/4 of a mile to the south which originally required travelling across the river on a log. While Linden had a buggy factory, a mill and a number of shops, North Linden had the railway station, a beanery, a stave factory, three story hotel, a church, tavern and my particular love, the general store I was much later to love and restore. Our beloved and long-time historical society member, Marguerite Plumb, has passed away. (she is pictured below at our August meeting) Marguerite was active in many civic organizations throughout her life, including Linden Summer Happenings and the Linden Historical Society, reflecting her deep love for and commitment to her community. She will be deeply missed by
all of us at the Linden Mills Historical Society and the town of Linden. Rest in peace Marguerite. Our deepest condolences and sympathy go out to the family of Marguerite. We are grateful for her continued support of the Society for so many, many years.

***The funeral will be at Sharp Funeral Home in Linden on Saturday, Sept. 26th at 11 AM, visitation from 10 to 11. Visitation also on Friday night from 4 to 8 PM. John Jolliffee Sleeman (1845-1931), standing in front of the Linden Post Office, which is now Linden Family Eye Care at 123 E. Broad St. He was Linden's Postmaster in the early 1900's, was born in London, Canada and came to Linden to work in the Beach Buggy factory. He also served as Worshipful Master of Linden #132 Masonic Temple Lodge from 1882-1884. John J. Sleeman was the father of Linden's beloved Dr. Blythe Rookes Sleeman (1884-1954) . Dr. Sleeman and his wife, Rose, are featured in the new LINDEN LEGENDS book. ( Both John J. and his son, Blythe/wife Rose are buried in Fairview Cemetery in Linden.)

TOMORROW, SATURDAY, SEPT 12TH!!! 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. VISIT PIONEER DAY AT THE PODUNK HOUSE 2436 N. Long Lake Rd in Fenton Twp. Built in 1836: Constructed by early settler George Judson, it is believed to be the second-oldest house in Genesee County. Thank you Podunk House members/volunteers for preserving our local/Genesee County's history!! The site features historical displays, guided tours, and family-friendly activities.

**Name Origin: Local Chippewa Native Americans named the area after hearing a mill wheel strike the water to make a distinctive "po-dunk" sound.

Old walls. New bones. Open sky.

The historic Linden Mill and its new addition taking shape, with the sky still visible through the unfinished construction. There’s something special about seeing the old and new come together before the building is complete; one of those incredible construction-phase views that disappears as quickly as it appeared.
